How bad is sugar for braces?

My ortho said that when I get braces, I need to stay away from sugary foods. But how much? And exactly what is bad about it and what harm will it do? Is ANY sugar bad, or is the occasional can of soda still OK?

Spragers:

He forced the molar bands down into your gums??? That sure doesn't sound like fun after the gums have been made tender from a week of spacers! Ugh!

It sounds like I have a 50/50 chance of having a good/bad experience. I'm expecting the spacers to be a living "heck" by what I've heard so far. They seem to be the worst thing about the whole process. Maybe that's what makes the rest of the process not seem quite as bad--once you've exper...

Will molar bands hurt?

I've finally scheduled the appointments for my braces, now that I'm healing up from my 4 extractions. On Jan. 11th, they will put in the spacers, on the 17th will come the molar bands, and the 31st is when the upper and lower braces go on. I don't look forward to any of it. One thing I don't underst...

That's what I think too--wait awhile for things to heal before getting braced. Give yourself a break! That's what I'm doing now, even though my dentist said I could start getting braced right away after he did my last extractions. I think I'm going to give it a month.

It happened to me too. It was painful to chew on a tooth right next to an extraction site. Eventually, after a week or so, it got better. I might be that the soreness of the gum around the extraction spreads to the teeth around it.

Yes, I agree! Have a dentist look at that--maybe x-ray it. By the shape and location of it, I haven't got a clue as to what it could be.

Is this lump on the top or the side of the gum? I have a couple lumps on the side (tounge side) that my dentist says is bone that shifted after an extraction. The other one is said to be the end of a root. The latter one isn't causing me any problems, and the former one is healing up slowly.

Thank you, bbsadmin! This whole thing can be a bit overwhelming. Fortunately, my situation hasn't noticably worsened yet, so hopefully things will hold out until I see him again on the 8th of this month and maybe he'll do something to make things better. If there is an infection, I don't know how lo...

Okay, I will contact them to see if they can tell me about other dentists that accept payment from them. I'll let you know what I discover.

Also, my next appt. with my current dentist is next Thursday. I hope my mouth can wait until then!

Wingnut: I don't have a medicaid representative. Worse yet, there are no other dentists who take Medicaid anywhere that I know of. I was told that the reason for that is because Medicaid only covers about 48% of their cost, making unworthwhile for them to take Medicaid patients. Even this dentist is...

Thank you everyone for your replies! I have a bit of an embarrasing confession to make. I have a medical coverage that is paid for by the state called Medicaid, and this was the last dentist in the area to accept it, putting me in a unique situation. I wouldn't be able to get any compensation for an...

Dentist botched my extraction!

I am currently getting teeth extracted before I can get braces put on, and now that I've started, I can't turn back. My dentist, who recommended strongly in the first place that I get braced, pulled the top and bottom bicuspids on my left side. The bottom one broke off while being pulled, but he sai...

Why do so many recipes call for frozen fruit to be put into a blender? Does it have to be frozen? I would think that it would chop up better if not frozen. Plus it wouldn't put so much wear and tear on the blender blade. But that's just my inexperienced opinion! :?
