To answer the question about dental cleanings: my hygienist has always just worked around my wires. I've never had them removed for a cleaning.

I had 2 brackets pop off from crowns in the first few days. They fixed them and they've been fine since then (Feb 2016).

I didn't notice the taste issue but this mouthwash definitely caused brown staining on my teeth near the gums.

My sentence is supposed to be 2 years total. In my case, I think the elastics are just to correct my bite now that they teeth have all moved to where they need to be.

I've had them on for over 18 months now and they yellowed right away. They replaced one bracket a few months in and I could really see the difference. White elastic power chains will also turn yellow very easily. I've sometimes gone for silver ones which sort of defeats the purpose of clear brackets.

I was well into my second year before my ortho started getting me to wear rubber bands.

I have Damon Clear and I'm really self-conscious of how yellow the brackets have become. If I did it all over again I think I would go for metal brackets.

I didn't have coil springs but I did get lingual buttons recently which really bothered my tongue for the first couple of days but now I barely notice them. Have you tried a salt water rinse?

I wish I'd known how stained my Damon clear brackets would get; I might have gone for metal instead. Just know that no matter what they throw at you, you will get used to it all eventually. My last adjustment made my teeth hurt more than usual so I'm back on soft foods for a few days. So far I've had meatloaf and scalloped potatoes, tortellini alfredo, and tonight is fish sticks and tater tots.

I don't drink tea but coffee doesn't seem to stain too much. Anything that contains turmeric is what I avoid as that will turn them yellow in an instant. I try to brush ASAP after any tomato-based sauces as well.

Yes, that sounds like a power chain to me! Watch out for the white or clear ones as they can stain quite easily.
