I don't know if this is the same thing, but my daughter's open bite was treated through the use of small titanium implants that were screwed into her upper jaw. The orthodontist used those implants to intrude the top back molars and close the bite. I must say...the results have been nothing short of...

The mini-implants Dr. J spoke of worked miraculously on my daughter's open bite...which was at least as severe as yours. Perhaps you can ask your doctor about that procedure. I think Dr. J is correct when he says it is a rather "maverick" procedure. Our orthodontist, however, is using it m...

Unfortunately, I don't have any photos to share. I'm sure the ortho has some in her file, but I don't have any to show you. So just try to imagine an open bite with a front gap big enough to easily stick your pinky through...now imagine a really nice bite. That would be her "then" and &quo...

She had the implants put in July 2004. The braces went on a few weeks later. Now her bite is closed and the braces wil...

Hey Mouse, It's great that you feel comfortable with your dentist, but make sure you become very well educated on TMJD before you do anything permanent. What are your dentist's credentials as far as treating TMJD? What percentage of his/her practice is devoted to this condition? Can you talk to othe...

Mouse - She had several kinds of splints over that 18-month period. We started conservatively and had worked our way up to other styles. Her problem was a displaced disc causing a closed lock. First she had a regular flat plane top splint for night only - then a thicker flat plane that she wore 24/7...

My daughter is wearing braces for Phase II of her TMJD treatment. For phase one she was in a series of splints which she wore 24/7 for about 18 months.

She was originally told that she would have braces for a couple of years, but it looks like it will actually take less time than than.

My daughter had these implants done and we have had the greatest results. She had a pretty severe open bite as a result of splint therapy for TMJD. The plan was a year to intrude the back molars using the implants as anchors to close the bite and a couple of years of braces to stabilize everything. ...
