It's really strange but i've never had cleats and don't recall them being ground off when my braces were 1st put on!
Can you get some bands that don't have cleats on them at all?
My bands aren't totally smooth all round... they are slightly raised where I imagine the cleats would have been.

I haven't lost any either and I eat anything I want (within reason).

Not just food but sometimes my floss will shred when it slides across my braces and little bits of it will get stuck in there and is almost impossible to get out. Hi there. I don't think you have anything to worry about. I had 4 teeth extracted also (with HUGE gaps) and now they are all closed.
