I'm not sure what retainer you have -- I have the Vivera hard-plastic type, and need to remove it before eating -- and yes, I think if you bit down hard you will damage the retainer. I finally got my brace off today and had a permanent retainer fitted anyway I just ate and bit into the retainer, the permanent retainer seems to still be in place but slightly worried I may have damaged the permanent retainer , would I know if the permanent retainer came loose or had been damaged?

I don't know. But in my 5 month experience with brackets coning off 8 times! They are either stuck or break off. Don't know if that helps.
