I had a gap open as well when I had the band taken off when they took impressions for my retainer.
The retainer I got wraps tightly all around my teeth and it re-closed the gap. Ask your ortho - I bet the same will happen with you.

Retainer
The orthodontist made me a new retainer and apologized for the first one. I now have two that fit -- after much work, the first one fits pretty well, now too.

Back to the orthodontist...
My retainer doesn't fit?! I've worn it non-stop save for eating and a few pictures, but it's never fit quite right. The orthodontist will be hearing from me in the morning. I didn't do 3.5 years in braces for my retainer not to fit.

Two hours at the orthodontist this morning (he's a busy guy with lots of patients) and I am braces free! Hawley retainer on the top (in BLUE) and bonded lower retainer. I'll post pictures when I get home from work.

Retainer Impressions Made - 2 weeks to go!
A set of molar bands taken off and impressions made. Rubber bands only at night for the next two weeks and the metal comes off on June 25, 2009!

I get my retainer impressions made tomorrow and some of the molar bands will come off as well.
