I got braces (top only) a couple days before a trip, and I was just fine. I may be on the luckier side, but I didn't really have a lot of pain or issues with getting braces. This is just anecdotal, of course, but just letting you know my experience.

I'm sure there are cases that warrant extractions, but I would be careful. Here is a video I saw on YouTube which would scare me if faced with this decision...

Hey guys! It's been 5 weeks and 2 days, and I'm thrilled with the progress! I've also noticed big gains from my first adjustment just 2 days ago. The top teeth are almost aligned! I get the bottom braces on Oct 31st.

In case anyone is wondering... I had my appt yesterday and did not get the power chain as my teeth were still not in alignment. Maybe next time!

If your teeth have been shifting already, then your retainers may not fit when you go in to get them. Make sure you try them on in the office. I can't see pics yet (maybe this will be the magic post!), but my ortho is also planning to put a power chain in 4 teeth that are still uneven at my next visit. I know power chains can do more than just close gaps, but I don't know what and how. I second asking or calling to inquire.

I would definitely call your ortho. It would suck to delay your removal date due to this.

I'm 35 and finally worked up the courage to get braces. I've had them about 4 weeks now.

Just go with the braces if that is the best option. I just got mine on at 35 and regret not doing it sooner. The long-term benefits will be worth it.
