My god, I can so relate to your posts. I go through stages where I barely think about my jaw at all but at other times it really bothers me, and like you there have been times when I've been doing something that's meant to be a lot of fun but it's been completely ruined because of niggling thoughts ...

Thanks for all the replies, they have been so helpful. I am finally starting to feel a little better about the whole thing which is nice! Unfortunately I know that to some extent this is going to affect my plans. I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I will be putting my life on hold for...

Feeling sad that nobody understands

In the last few days I've been feeling really sad about everything, which tends to trigger my worrying about my jaw. I have an overbite, and am on the NHS waiting list for surgery to fix it, although for a long time I have been going back and forth, wondering if it's the right thing to do or if I sh...

Helen, The surgeon said that my bite is not correct, however it doesn't appear to be causing any functional problems and it is unlikely to in the future. He said if it bothers me, I should have the operation, if not I should go out and enjoy life. He also said I was already very attractive, and my m...

Thank you for your replies. In some ways, I do see where my parents are coming from. Helen, what you said about your experience was truly shocking (drooling and funny looks from strangers?! I have most certainly not ever experienced that! I'm sorry that you have, and I think if I was in that positio...

I've posted in this forum before but not for a while. Basically I just had a chat with my mother - it's been a long time since we've talked about jaw surgery. I go through phases where my overbite bothers me and phases where I'm ok with it - I'm currently on the waiting list to have surgery (I'm in ...

And again, please don't tell me I just need time to come to terms with it, because as I said before it's now been a year since I went back to the surgeon, and I first went when I was thirteen, so I have known for a very very long time what the surgery entails, and that I need it if I ever want to fi...

I feel as though you're all trying to persuade me to have this operation! As far as moving the jaw muscles forward goes, the surgeon informed me it's perfectly fine seeing as it is what they are now used to and I find it really difficult pushing my jaw back into its old position. He also said they a...

To be honest, I have known that I have had this problem for over ten years now, so have had plenty of time to come to terms with it. When I was eleven my orthodontist commented on it and said he would refer me because he was worried I would grow up to have, in addition to other problems relating to ...

Hello, Thanks very much for the replies, they both helped a lot. Dave, I suppose you're right in that an overbite is an overbite, and all the surgeon was doing was diagnosing it. Many people on this message board would be thrilled if they could get the surgery for free! I shouldn't really get angry ...

Self-esteem - being diagnosed as "aesthetically unappea

I have an overbite. Basically, it's a long story, but it doesn't actually look as bad as it should because over time my muscles have compensated for it, meaning I automatically hold my jaw forward. My profile isn't perfect, but it appears relatively "normal" (as in, when I explain my "...

Shortest/longest possible time in braces before surgery

Ok...here's the deal. I know I should talk to my surgeon but I'm impatient and I won't have an appointment for months! I have an underbite but I had fixed braces for 18 months so my teeth are straight. I don't think either jaw needs expanding, all that needs to happen is my teeth need to be re-align...
