Well, orthodontists are dentists, so you have to go through dental school to become a dentist. Becoming an orthodontist requires taking additional courses...in orthodontics.

Yes, that is normal. I just had an adjustment the other day and asked my ortho about that, as i have had a several gaps form in my lowers as well. He says they spread things apart before they bring them all tight together.

I too have an open bite that was slightly smaller yours. I was braced in Damon 3 braces nearly 5 months ago. I am ahead of schedule and have seen significant results with my open bite. My treatment time was estimated from 9-14 months, but currently he reduced that by 2 months so I will be braced for...

my treatment time is 9-12 months :) it was originally 9-14 months, but he saved me 10 weeks at my first adustment bc he decided to go agressive and put a stronger wire in:)

You could go to the store and buy a rinse called Rinsinol (I believe that is how the name is spelled). I got a free sample of it when i got braced and it is basically a fancy rinse that does what the saltwater rinse does. Pricey, but may be worth it for you.

Oh, and by the way...you do NOT need to use very much on your toothbrush. One tube should last you many months!
