I was actually in my elastics until I finished braces, but only at night after 3 months. But I've read about other people out from the day they're discharged. Like everything else, it really depends on your specific case and your surgeon's preferences.

Singer - I had lots of ear pain after my jaw surgery. In fact it's been 11 months since my surgery and I still have some pain in my ear. I was told it was actually transfered jaw pain, since the joint is right close to the ear, and comes from the muscles getting used to their new position. I found t...

I really hate to say this, because it's not the answer that you're looking for, but when you can talk normally again really depends on so many things. After my double jaw surgery I was able to talk well enough to be understood by people who really listened after a couple of days. I could talk, with ...

Don't worry ohmyjaw, I still had some slight swelling for a couple of months after the surgery. Most of the really noticeable swelling disappeared after 3 weeks, but the small swelling lasted for about 3-4 months. When it disappeared everyone just said it looked like I lost weight, not like swelling...

To throw another crazy scenario out there, I was never told to wear my essix retainer 24/7. The bonded retainer is there, well, all the time, but I wore my essix at night only for the first two weeks, then got a special retainer for tongue thrusting that I'm also only supposed to wear at night. I th...

Physio? What sort of issues can physio help with? Does it help with range of motion? I didn't realize you could get physio for jaw surgery.

If you could post with some information on how it works out, that would be great, because it might be something a few of us would be interested in.

Meryaten it wasn't really so bad. Because I was still coming out of the anethesia it was like I was observing it in someone else. Now that it's all behind me it just makes for a funny story. I know it's been said before, but it's so true, the end result really is worth everything it takes to get the...

To be honest, it's not as bad as you imagine. After my surgery I had so many nosebleeds and vomitted so much that I was in the recovery room for 6-7 hours before going out to the ward, instead of the usual 1-2. I found out afterwards they had ruptured my sinuses, so it was fun times. To be honest, t...

I know it's a lot to take in, but it is manageable. When I had my original consult with the OS they had said that they would do a BSSO to fix my open bite and correct my sleep apnea. That's it. I met with my surgeon two days before my surgery for my 'final' consult and everything seemed ok. Then he ...

Re: Lefort I and BSSO

I had Lefort 1 and BSSO in September. I was in the hospital from Wednesday morning to Saturday afternoon. While I was there my mom stayed in a hotel and would come and visit me all day. After I was released I went to stay with my parents for another week (I live by myself 6 hours away from my surgeo...

When I had my surgery in September I didn't go back to work for 11 days, and then planned to go back to work part-time for another week. I ended up going right back to work full time after the 11 days - though I was pretty tired after the end of the days. Given my job though, there really would have...

About seven weeks after the surgery. I had an extreme open bite, and it all felt worth while the day the splint came out, and I could see my upper teeth meet properly with my bottom teeth. Even though I still have braces, and limited ROM, nothing can take my happiness away about seeing my teeth touc...

Like with everything else after the surgery, it seems each surgeon offers different guidelines for post-op care. My oral surgeon gave me special mouth wash to use the first week, then I used ambesam (sp?) that the pharmacist recommended. I wanted to use a Waterpik, but I was told not to since it cou...

I think part of the reason they were so attentive is the complications I had in the recovery. After the first 24 hours in the COU I had to fend for myself, but at first I wasn't able to do any of that. I wasn't allowed to get out of bed for a while, because of the sinus problems. Which was all good,...
