Always~ I had a similar situation and unfortunately my new benefits do not cover Orhto for anyone over age 19. To get around that I continued my old dental insurance though COBRA (you can choose to COBRA just dental and not elect to continue your old medical coverage). It costs me about $35 a month,...

People who understand!

Just a bit of great news that only people here will understand… my ortho removed my palate expander yesterday and I was so happy I honestly nearly cried. I try not to talk about it much, but I did mention to a few people what a great day it was and I got a few ‘huh, that’s nice’ respon...

Impacted Canine

Hey everyone! I went to the Ortho last night for my monthly adjustment and had an interesting conversation with him. My upper teeth have moved enough now so we are about to start the process of pulling down the impacted canine, which is good news, of course; but I was under the impression that he wa...

Samantha~ I’ve had my upper expander in for about 3 months, and I understand your pain as I also had serious tongue issues. For some reason my expander came with two little ‘hooks’ that stuck out of the bottom of the bracket where it attached to the inside of my molars. It also had two rods st...

SMC- It’s so different for everyone, but I would recommend going ahead with your treatment now. I was in a similar situation – I interviewed for a position the day after my impressions. I was offered the job, started work, and then had a palate expander and upper braces installed one week after ...

Dry lips and cheeks

I have been drinking lots of water but the inside of my lips still feel super dry. I know water is supposed to help, but I’ve been drinking a ton and it doesn’t seem to cut it. Has anyone ever applied anything inside your lips and cheeks (such as Vaseline or something)?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for all the advice… today was the big day and I went with ceramic. They’re feeling a bit bulky tonight, but I’m sure I would feel that way on day one no matter which brackets were used. I’m sure I will get used to them soon. So here we go… I hope the next two years fly by! -Bi...

Hi Paddy, I have the same expander (W-shaped spring that applies constant pressure). I felt the exact same my first couple of days, but I feel much better even after just one month. I found it too difficult to try anything other than soup and shakes the first week (and by soup I mean tomato and othe...

Ceramic or metal? I can’t decide.

I am getting my upper braces on Monday and I just can’t decide if I should go with ceramic or metal. My Ortho said that he would do either and wouldn’t recommend one over the other so I’m still indecisive. My Ortho brought out one of each of brackets and the ceramic look so much bigger, but I ...

I just had my expander installed this afternoon. I thought I was doing fine because it didn’t hurt too much, but I just tried to eat my first meal and thought I was going to have a breakdown. I thought chicken and rice soup was going to be easy because it was soft, but I didn’t think about how e...

Thanks for the words of wisdom, I think I may have just needed a bit of encouragement. I do feel a little better, and the Rainbow Passage is a great idea – I will definitely use that! And I have to say that I love that no one asked about the possibility of postponing the expander! When I mentioned...
