Yes my retainer looks like that one in the link, but with less acrylic in front. You cant see the acrylic head on when its in, but still i cant bite down all the way. my bottom teeth are in the way. Mine has a pontic (fake tooth ) attached, and ortho said something about how they made it thicker so ...

My molars dont touch because I cant bite down all the way. Is this how all Hawley retainers are?

Ill be getting my retainer soon, and im reading all sorts of mixed experiences with them.
One question i have is, how much of the upper pallatte (roof) do they cover? Can they be shaved to fit better?

also, since im questioning, how thick are they, and can that be altered???

I get my braces off when my retainer is ready in 2 weeks.
My ortho is making me a retainer (Hawley) with a pontic (a tooth attached to it to fill my gap in the front)
She told me you can chew/eat with it, but Ive heard you cant.
What are your experiences with this?

Thanks! Thats a big help to know. I am going for a retainer fitting next wednesday and I need to discuss my options with her. I agree, youll never entirely stop feeling the bulk, but you will start to feel MUCH more comfortable with the feeling. Yes, they go from one bracket to the next, and they are twisted in betweer each bracket along the lenght of the archwire.
My orhto called it 'rope ties'.
Does it go by another name maybe?

Went to the 3rd adjustment a week and and half early because i had a loose bracket. It turned into my scheduled adjustment. I now have 'rope ties', and I got a very breif explination of them when I asked. Can anyone tell me what this is doing exactly?

Just dont try to eat a tootsie roll! After a month of being braced, i realized with caution i can eat anything, so i tested my new chewing skills with a tootsie roll and broke a bracket!
Everything else should be fine
