relax

The best advice I received pre-surgery was: relax, and think positive thoughts.

I wrote about my hospitcal experience here: http://bracemyself.blogspot.com/2007/02 ... -side.html

Hope it helps!

talk to an OS

I second that. Talk to an oral surgeon. Better yet, talk to at least two. They do this for a living. Chances are, they've seen, or even operated on cases just like yours. You won't know until you consult them!

Tilting?

My chin looked really long as well (vertically). When I went for consultation, my oral surgeon told me that the appearance can be reduced - not through jaw shaving, but through tilting the lower jaw. In other words, he tipped my lower jaw in through surgery. As a result, now my face is 9 mm shorter!...

it'll look worse before it starts looking better

....but you'll get where you should be at the end. I had an edge-on-edge bite, they made it look worse with 12 months of braces.... then after surgery my jaws snapped into the right positions.

Best of luck to you!

The weeks after double jaw surgery are the most difficult.... but you'll pull through! I did a year ago. You'll have lots of improvements to look forward to!

I 2nd that!

I second what "ohmyjaw" said. I had upper and lower jaw surgery, too. The energy level drops pretty dramatically in the first two to three weeks. But after that it's almost EZ street. :)

Hey everyone! I'm three months post op. Had upper and lower jaw surgery on January 31st. Healing well, no complications, and eating almost anything I want (which may NOT be a good thing). ;) I've posted lots of photos here on the blog - a chronicle of the whole braces/surgery/recovery experience. Ho...

I had an edge-on-edge bite

Hey guys, I had an edge-on-edge bite where my upper and lower teeth were on the same vertical plane (as opposed to the upper falling in front of the lower). From the looks of it, you'd think it's an underbite. And oh yeah, I HATED my big lower jaw!! After a year of braces, I had my upper and lower j...

Hey Exodus, I had something similar to an underbite - it was an edge-on-edge bite - and I had double jaw surgery on 1/31. Where in California do you live? I might be able to recommend my surgeon to you. I'm in the Bay Area.
