I was wired for just three weeks and worried about my teeth rotting. I began brushing with a baby toothbrush on the second or third day--just kept trying to brush as far back as I could on the sides. And, of course, I used the mouth rinse prescribed. I remember fantasizing about being able to just g...

12 weeks post-op: ear pain and clicking

Uh oh. Everything was going so well--then a couple of weeks ago I was eating my morning cereal and *click* went the right side of my jaw. That continued to happen sporadically, then a few days ago it was clicking with every movement I made--that only last for an evening and now it's back to doing it...

Oh, Phil, I'm so sorry...If someone were to wire me shut again I think I would die! But it's just bands, right?

You seem to have a great attitude about it! Hang in there...

Phil: Yes, I am measuring between my incisors--or my front upper and lower teeth. I've eaten hamburgers for the past two nights and that seems to have helped a bit. I didn't force my mouth open, but I gave it a good stretch! The singing is my main worry. I am a high soprano, so my range is limited ...

Recovering range of motion after BSSO and wiring...

I was just reading posts from an earlier thread in which some of you describe your experiences regaining your range of motion after surgery. I am 8 weeks post-op, but only 5 weeks unwired--and only 2 weeks chewing. I just measured and my opening is 18mm. It's definitely come a long way, but I'm just...

Three months wired? Are you kidding me?! I was wired for a little over three weeks and thought I was going to die...Actually, towards the end I sort of forgot about other food and just got used to drinking milkshakes and smoothies. But it's the general discomfort of not being able to open your mouth...

I've been unhinged!!!

It's been 3 weeks and 2 days since my surgery and since I was wired shut--but the wires were cut this morning!!! I have to say that it was not the wonderful relief I had anticipated. I knew I wouldn't be able to open my mouth very much and that the muscles would be totally atrophied from their 3-wee...

Thanks, everyone, for your kind thoughts. I know one more week is nothing and this whole thing will be distant memory before long. OMG, WhiteLurcher! A second surgery?! I can't even imagine. What is your current condition? Re the fiber, I thought that fiber is a diuretic, i.e. helps you go. But you ...

2 Weeks Post-Op: The graphic truth about being wired...

So, I was reading the post about how some people are banded and some not at all. Makes me very jealous. Due to unfortunate multiple splits on my left side, I had to be wired and I am about at the end of my rope... No one thinks to tell you that liquid-only IN means liquid-only OUT. Here I am with my...

Surprise--wired shut! 3 days post-op...

I had my surgery (BSSO) on Tuesday, May 22. Apparently, breaking my right side was a piece of cake, but my left side split in multiple places. So, that meant additional surgery time, more nuts and bolts, and a complete wire closure for THREE TO SIX WEEKS. I thought I was going to lose it when they t...

It's almost here!

My surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday. My orhto said I was ready a few months ago, but scheduling all the visits with the surgeon was a nightmare. At least I'm having it a time when I don't have any singing engagements lined up. Needless to say, I'm anxious to get it over with! The latest thing i...

Lower Jaw Surgery--When will I be able to sing???

Hi all! I'm trying to schedule my surgery and need an idea of how long it will take me to return to my everyday activity of singing. I understand that many people are able to go back to work within two weeks--but I am a teacher, so I wonder about range of motion and ability to talk, etc. My surgeon ...

Glad to read your post...

MaryJay-- You sound exactly like me! I am almost 30, have been wearing braces since last May, and am supposed to have lower jaw surgery in a couple of months. I have the exact same fears and worries about returning to work--particularly because I am a singer and music teacher. I'm so afraid that I w...
