Question re: Orthognathic Surgery and insurance
Hello. I'm wondering if other Americans had full or partial insurance coverage for orthognathic surgery. If your insurance paid, what type was it? And, was there a charge for your initial consult? I just spoke to the oral surgeon's office to which my orthodontist referred me. They told me that they...

Thanks for the supportive replies, everyone. I'll do a consult with the oral surgeon and then one more conversation with the orthodontist before deciding what to do. My primary reason for seeking treatment is concern for the future rather than a major problem in the present. The tricky part is that ...

Considering surgery to correct asymmetric jawbone
Hi. I have a misaligned bite caused at least in part by an asymmetric jawbone (lower on the right side than the left). Has anyone else had -- or decided not to have -- surgery to correct a similar problem?
If so, I'd love to hear about your experiences!
Many thanks,
JadeBlue

Surprise plot twist at records visit follow-up!
So yesterday I had the follow-up consult after my records visit. The ortho thought that my open bite was likely dental and could probably be corrected with a combination of braces, elastics and pins in the jawbone. Turns out, though, that the x-rays revealed a skeletal problem: I have an asymmetric ...

Latex sensitivity and ligs, elastics, powerchains
Hello. I don't think I am totally allergic to latex, but I am prone to migraines and have noticed that the last 2 times I blew up latex balloons for a party I got a migraine right away. It seems that exposure to latex might be a migraine trigger for me! That got me thinking: would elastics, ligs and...

Hi there! I had my records done yesterday, and it wasn't bad at all and it didn't make me gag. Just try to relax and keep breathing slowly and steadily. I picked a focal point on the ceiling and tried to go into as much of a meditative state as is possible with a big tray of goop crammed into my mou...

Hi Lisa, and welcome! Your situation sounds similar to mine. I am 41 with basically straight teeth but a bad bite. I, too, am concerned about long-term tooth preservation. I figure that I want to live at least 40 more years and would like to have my teeth for the rest of my life. They are wearing un...

Hi. I'm a new patient, but so far I'd have no hesitation in recommending Dr. Aaron DeMaio in Amherst/Northampton, MA practice. (His office phone: 413-586-0555.) I consulted with 3 area orthos before choosing him. He and his staff seem good. Best of luck! Keep us posted.

Records visit and confession re: cute orthodontist
This morning I had my x-rays and impressions taken. I go back in 3 weeks for an outline of proposed treatment plan. My positive sense of this orthodontist continues. It seems like a good practice! I like the receptionist and the tech that I met today. Everyone seems competent and is easy to talk to....

Third Consult (The charm?)
Wow! I am definitely learning why you should have multiple consults before choosing an orthodontist! I've had 3 now, and each one has been sooo different! The third one (today) was the one I felt best about. First off, this ortho's office is 1/4 mile from my office (very convenient!) but that's not...

Skeletal vs. Dental open bite
Hi. I've been reflecting back on my first two orthodontic consults, which took place this week (I've got two more scheduled in the next few weeks). You guys have been great in helping me understand and interpret what I heard, so THANKS! :D One lingering question: OK, so I now know that I have an op...

Hello. I've noticed that blue, green and even orange Listerine will temporarily stain my night guard, which is an appliance made out of clear, hard plastic (similar to what's used for Hawley retainers). It could possibly stain your ligatures, if you've got clear or light rubber ones. Probably not, ...

Thanks JT2 and Clo and Mike! I'm learning a lot and am becoming less convinced that braces + elastics are the solution to my problems (especially since I already tried that). I'm scheduling 2 more consults, with one in a more urban area (doctors in my rural New England town can be a bit backwards, ...
