Hi there, I used to be a long time lurker and occasional poster on this board while I was undergoing treatment and I remember promising another board member I would post pictures of my teeth once I'd completed the treatment, so here they are! The Hawley I wore at the start of my treatment had to worn when I was eating - it was also correcting my overbite and as such, it was "training" my mouth as i ate and drank. It's perfectly fine to wear it while eating.

I had a retainer just like that before i got my fixed braces, but just with springs to move back two teeth. The ortho was also trying to correct a massive overbite. Which he did! It took me around 2 weeks to get completely used to it - the speech slurring was my greatest problem, but after two weeks...

I was under the impression it took at least a year for your teeth to settle into their new positions after braces, so I would guess you would have had to wear your retainer for another 6 months.

Certainly makes for interesting reading! My own personal tooth dream is that I'm at the end of treatment and the ortho debands my back teeth...so far so good.
