hmmmm.... none of the above..... my bends are quite large in comparison to those pictured. They are bends with the open side down, the size of a ceramic bracket, right over the brackets on my canines. They are not held in with ligs, but sit right over the bracket. The teeth he is trying to move ARE ...

What do bends in the archwires do?
I did a search, but didn't turn up any obvious answers. They are probably buried in this forum somewhere, as I am not the only one to ask, but... What are the little u-shaped bends in the archwire supposed to do and how does it work? I get the idea that it somehow increases the pressure on the teeth...

good for you! I was thinking today that you can really get used to anything- last week I thought I would NEVER be more comfortable with these molar bands with the attached razor blades on the inside (well, ok, they're tubes for the inside wire I will get eventually) but in only a week I am much bett...

Don't forget you are responsible for supervising your child in her braces, so for best results they should make sure you understand everything about the treatment. By that I mean don't feel you are a nuisance by asking questions, you need to know so you can take the best care you can and get great r...

how old?
My 10 yr old twins just got braces. The ortho said that 10 is a perfect age, since they are about to go into a growth spurt and the jaws can be easily adjusted (they have an overbite). Having said that, a friend's daughter just finished with a jaw expander, and she is the same age- she had the expan...

I think it depends on what you need and who your ortho is, which is affected by where you live. The 4 of us are each around 5,000, with the twins being the most expensive (headgear and metals), me in the middle somewhere (no headgear, all but 4 ceramic, some inside anchoring appliances top and botto...

We're in this together...
We have to drive 25min from home and about 30 from the kids' school, so we all go together when possible. The ortho's office is quite close to my work, so I can go at different times if need be. There are no orthos we wanted to work with in our immediate area (only 2 to choose from), and this guy is...

thanks for the welcome!
Things are improving already- the pain in my tongue is less, but then I am not snacking. I'm also going thru a lot of wax, and doing salt water rinses. I tried an old remedy my Mom taught me many years ago- put alum on a wet Qtip and apply that to the sore. Leave it for a minute and rinse. It stings...

We're on the Family Plan ; )
In our family of 5, only Dad isn't wearing braces. We have two dental plans- mine and his- and it covers everything for all of us, something we are very happy about! My 10 yr old twins sucked their thumbs until they were at least 6, so we knew that braces were in their futures for sure. I was back a...

new here, newly braced too
I've been lurking for awhile, and soaking up all the great advice here. The info I found on this site helped so much with everything- I'm sure glad you're here. Like so many others I have always disliked my crooked teeth, my brother got the braces since his were worse and my parents couldn't afford ...
