ABSOLUTELY I've felt this way. Because I don't smile, people think I'm moody or negative, or depressed. On top of that, because I was so ashamed of my teeth, I would never make eye contact when talking to people for fear that they'd focus on my teeth. I'm hoping that having more normal looking teeth...

Hi MommaDucky- it looks as if I'll be in braces for at least the next 24-36 months. My ortho doesn't want to pin down a more accurate time than that because she doesn't want to set an unrealistic expectation. Of course I'm hoping it's closer to 24 months instead of 36. :)

I thought I'd share a picture of me from the first day the braces went on:

And this is what I look like when I smile - you can barely tell I'm wearing them at all:

Sistermadly's Ortho-Dontcha Diary

I thought I'd start by summarizing my story thus far. The skinny: I'm a 38-year old woman in Vancouver, Canada who is wearing braces for the first time. I'm married, no kids, and I have a professional degree (though I work in a very casual environment). I'm primarily getting braces for cosmetic reas...

Best of luck, Sandy! I've been braced for five days and it's been quite an adjustment, but I know it'll be beneficial in the long run. We're here to offer support!

I show my teeth more now than I ever have in my entire life. I've spent so many years smiling with closed lips and hanging my head down when I laugh that I'm having to learn how to laugh and smile all over again.

I don't feel like a veteran quite yet. I've had to result to putting wax on my two front teeth overnight, because if I don't my lips will stick to my front teeth and will be extremely painful in the morning. I'm pretty grumpy and sad these days - I'm finding it hard to chew, which means I'm hungry a...

Well... they're on. :) This morning was quite an ordeal. I've been undergoing quite a bit of dental work over the last few years (wisdom teeth, extractions, fillings, etc.) and while those were uncomfortable, at least I had the benefit of an anaesthetic! Because I have full lips, the ortho assistant...

My ortho's also my dentist, and she and her hygienist and ortho tech always end up talking about television shows while I'm in the chair - mostly reality shows! I told them that I don't usually watch them, but that they're so entertaining I don't mind the chatter.

Tomorrow morning at 9:00 my journey begins. I've spent the last month eating (and thoroughly enjoying) foods that I know will be difficult if not impossible to eat over the next two years. Now that I'm so close to having my braces put on, I'm feeling really apprehensive. I've been wanting to cut my ...
