What are powerchains? What do they look like? What are they for? What are they made of? Does everyone get them?

29 Female, Bay Area, California. Ceramic uppers and lowers. First time in braces. Just had my first adjustment yesterday. Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Although today I'm still a little sore. 22.5 months to go.
