Bonded retainer - shouldn't it be completely glued to teeth?
Hi there, I'm now brace-free - hurray! and getting used to the permanent retainer on the inside of my teeth. (To be joined by a Hawley retainer once it's been made). I was picking at the back of one of the teeth where I thought I had a bit of food in between two of my teeth, when I realised that the...

You would certainly think it should be possible to have a free appointment just to look at your teeth and give you a quote. That would be the norm in any other line of business! BUT to be honest I don't think that's going to happen, ArchAngle. That just does not seem to be the case with orthodontics...

I agree! I think maybe if you are self-conscious about your braces, you probably won't smile as much, which might have an effect. If you look miserable, self-conscious or shy, it probably won't help your chances of attracting someone's attention! But that's not because of the brace - it's because of...

Hi there, and welcome! Well done for taking the plunge. I got my braces last Oct, so I'm pretty new too. Yep the consultation fee seems pretty standard here in the UK. I paid £80 for an appointment with x-rays and moulds. I wasn't too keen on the treatment he was proposing, so after a bit of agonis...

Hm, great question! OK so what have I learned since I had braces? 1. People don't really notice or judge your appearance that much. The braces (and my wonky teeth) seem really obvious to me, but other people aren't that bothered! 2. It's a great feeling when you seize the initiative and try somethin...

If all you have is teeth pulling against teeth then, generally speaking, all involved teeth will move. The analogy I use is this: if you have two people, one at each end of a stretched bungee cord, then they will tend to be pulled towards each other. Would it be true though that because the molars ...

Another thought... I'm guessing that probably a significant majority of orthodontic work is done on teenagers, so in that sense I suppose it's fair enough to say that 30 is 'really old' for orthodontic work, on average! This board is certainly not going to be representative in terms of ages, partly ...

loulou, I live in the UK too and I'm 39! I got braced 3 months ago and I'm hoping I might be done before I'm 40 :D Orthodontic work wasn't suggested when I was a teenager - I don't know why. I don't think my teeth were so crowded then. I'm guessing that for some people, they have a little more spare...

Thanks to everyone who's posted on this topic. Just to report back... :) I had my adjustment last week, and I confessed to my ortho that I'd cut the end of the wire off. She was very relaxed about it, said that it's my mouth, and my brace, and there's not a lot I could do that would cause a lot of d...

Ooh! Thank you for the pics :) I was being a bit dull, I think. I had seen some pics like this on the forum, but I hadn't realised they were powerchains... I think I was imagining that somehow just my front two teeth would be linked together, which I thought would look a bit odd! I wil...

What do powerchains on front teeth look like?
Hi there, I've been reading a couple of threads where people have talked about having powerchains on their front teeth, to close a gap at the front. Does anyone have a pic of what that looks like? I have what I think are powerchains at the sides. I had one tooth extracted at either side, to make roo...
