FWIW, my spacers didn't so much "hurt" as they made those teeth/gums itch and throb slightly. Most people compare it to the feeling of having a big chunk of meat stuck between your teeth. Not painful, but irritating as heck.

BTW, I don't know if this is unusual or not, but I had to have 2 separate appointments.

The first one they used the lip-spreader and put on the brackets and spacers, then a week later, they removed the spacers, put on the metal bands on my molars and added the wires and ligs.

Good to know - thanks. I'll pick up some sensitve-teeth toothpaste and hope it goes away soon. It's been about a week so far. Very annoying.

Sudden sensitivity to cold

Last week I had my lower wire changed and my basic lig change. Since then I've noticed my teeth (top & bottom) are incredibly sensitive to cold. Even a cold breeze will make them ache. Has anyone else experienced this? Will it go away?

First adjustment, about 5 weeks after I started. I thought it might be helpful to those just starting out to see the staining potential of the different lig colors. Clear ligs/powerchains when I started out: http://a164.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/79/l_9fa9d7d3220a821ecc982ac0dd248cdb.jpg Clea...

FWIW, I noticed very quickly that in the few areas where the cement was not completely covered by the bracket (ceramic in my case), the cement stained badly. I now have a few dark-brown "outlines" on my front teeth (naturally!). I do feel like my teeth look dingier in general. It may be th...

I think I'm going to try silver next time. For my first ligs (powerchain, actually), I had pearl. It's working great stainwise (I smoke and drink coffee, and no noticeable discoloration so far). But over the silver wire, it looks kind of ... I dunno ... milky. Like I got yogurt on my braces and didn...

Got 'em in!

Got my wires and ligs today! I have a powerchain on my upper front four teeth and regular ligs everywhere else. No elastics, though those are planned for down the road. I also got a metal ring on 4 of my molars (for holding the wire I assume). I got pearl ligs (thought I'd go conservative to start),...

My periodontist insists on the same - every three months at her office. I'm not complaining (even though my insurance only covers 2 / year). I want to make sure there's nothing I'm doing to delay getting these suckers off (after 52 hours...)

Annoying tooth irritation

Augh. I've had my brackets and spacers in for a little over 2 days. Although there's no "pain" per se, it's so incredibly irritating on my molars. Dull throbbing. I've been taking Excedrin, although that's normally good for headaches, not tissue pain. I need motrin or advil. Or tequila. Ju...

As a small ray of hope to those reading this thread and cringing, I had my spacers put in yesterday and haven't found them at all painful. They used rubber spacers and my molars are fairly tight together, so they had to jam fairly hard to get them in. And I'm a baby about pain. So, you may luck out!

My sister in law was a model for many years. My understanding is that the agencies evaluate you in general for potential, then tell you what you need to do (lose 10 lbs, build up your arms, get your hair cut/dyed, get braces, etc). So going to an agency now would probably be helpful, because they wo...

Funny things you didn't plan for?

Before getting ortho, I read as much as I could on it (I've been "prepping" for 7 months, so I had a lot of time to do so). I've only had brackets on for a few hours, but I've already run into something I didn't even think about. When I put on lip balm or lipstick, I normally rub my lips t...

Well, I've got the brackets (ceramic) on -- the arch wires and bands come next week. I tried some mushroom bisque and found that those brackets catch everything . :x I'm considering ingesting nothing but Slimfast and margaritas for the next 2 years, ha ha. I haven't noticed any soreness from the spa...

I went in for my first consult last June. I just got my brackets put on today. The problem was a "pocket" from when I had my wisdom tooth removed -- she wanted that checked by a periodontist first. I spent several months going back and forth with the periodontist (who did a distal ...
