Quad Helix vs RPE ?

#1 Post by LargeMouthDad »

Hello all,

My son, Age 6 (almost 7), has a crossbite with some of the typical jaw alignment issues. We have just had our initial consult with an ortho and did a 2nd opinon at another ortho. They pretty much agreed on everything except the type of expander to use. One wants to use an RPE and another wants to use a quad helix.

What do you all think based on experience is the least painful and/or most effective expander? From what I have read here, it seems RPE = tooth soreness and quad helix = tongue soreness.

Feedback?

When in doubt an RPE is always more definitive expansion of the actual jaw bones. Quads sometimes are less stable but in a 6 -7 year old are appropriate.

Thanks for the reply. We too decided that either treatment would probably work due to his age. We talked it over with him and let him feel he got to help make the decision. He (We) decided on the quad. He went in for his spacers the other day. Will post back as we get further along.
