linguals fitted yesterday: a few questions

#1 Post by lucid »

Hi Everyone, i am 29, and it all started a few weeks ago.
I had the consultations, and we decided to go for linguals, we took the molds and sent it off to be made, 4 weeks later, the linguals were fitted, we then took another mold, and theni had two extractions, and yesterday i wire got fitted.

I am okay with all this, and am very happy, but...
They fitted these rings around my back teeth, with a wire spanning across my pallet, and this big thing pressing against my pallet.
My questions is... what is this thing called?
And why the hell does it have to be so big?
and does everyone whom gets linguals, get this thing too?
Because i am having trouble talking, its in the place of my tongue.
I am sure i wont have the trouble talking, if i didnt have this thing.

The other thing bothering me, is that my situation is, that my front teeth are crossed, and now with the linguals, it feels like they are getting pulled even closer... do you think this is normal?

My ortho is the best guy in the world... but he doesnt really explain these things to me... which makes me feel i never got the opportunity to really prepare myself mentally.

Meryaten, thank you for the reply... doing a search, I could read up a little bit more about the nance button.

Day 1 and Day 2 was really bad with the speach, and I had a really bad gag reflex everytime I spoke... today was much better, I had to speak to an employee the whole day, and never had the gag reflex, so it looks like that is getting better. Although, I sound like a deaf person, my speach is really very slurred... im not under confident, so I tell people I had dental treatment, and my speach is effected, and they then understand... but I do hope it gets better.
It feels like the nance button is 1 centimeter thick... I am sure they could design a thinner one...
Can I suggest they remove the nance button as soon as the extraction gaps close?

Hmmm....

Not entirely sure what the thing in the roof of your mouth is! In the future, ASK! I know I bug the crap outta my ortho.. "Whats that?" "Whats it do?" "How long?"... Id rather know then not know!

As for speech, etc, it gets so much better! I had a terrible time at first, but ive been in my braces for a year now, and its so unoticeable now!

Hang in there :)

Thanks for the advice.

I must admit... its actually 7 days and 2 hours since i have had mine fitted.
And day 4 into day 5 everything became much easier.
i am still slightly struggling with speech... my S'es and C's strugle still... i used to do a lot of lectures, and am glad i dont have to anymore... it would have been a nightmare.

I havent used wax yet, and dont think i will have to ever...
I started eating proper food again on day 5 and 6... i almost went mad not being able to eat.
even had some thai food last night.
But, im going to have to make a few smoothies for the next few meals, otherwise the bananas i bought will go to waste.

All in all, i feel good about the braces... except that it feels and look to me like they are being pulled tighter inwards instead of outwards.... ill have to call the ortho about that, coz if this goes on, things are bound to start looking worse than before.

Thanks again

PS: It's completely and totally normal for things to get worse before they get better!

My top teeth were ALWAYS straight. I ran off to my ortho in a panic because my two front teeth were criss-crossing. She said "relax, it sometimes gets worse before better!" keep that in mind!
