UPPER LINGUALS IN TODAY

#1 Post by lisac01 »

I have been reading this forum for the past two years, I finally took the leap and got a consultation and finally my braces arrived. I got the uppers in today and the lowers will go in January.

I feel fine, my speech is slured which is troubling since I speak for a living. I remain hopeful that this go away shortly. No pain so far although my tongue is probably saying what the hell is going on!!

Do you regret it? What are you eating? Did your ortho tell you to read out loud to rid of the lisping? Let me know how things go with you. Hope you have a better day tomorrow.

Hi Lisa,
Good on you for taking the step on linguals! I'm new to them as well, had upper and lowers done 8 days ago.
I found that the lisp was very bad for me initially too, especially at work. It seems to have really settled over the last 3 days though, luckily!
It feels pretty bad at first, but trust me, it does settle down :)
Hope things go well for you this week :)

And teach- good luck getting braced tomorrow! Make sure you have a nice big dinner tonight!! :)

I had linguals put on today on my uppers. My tongue doesn't seem to mind it at all. Although eating for the first time was an odd experience.

My speech had definitely changed and I have a very hard-to-hide lisp. It's only been about 2 hours since I had them in. My ortho told me to read aloud and speak as much as I could.

I'm hoping it'll get better - can anyone confirm it will?? I have a feeling my 's' will always sound like a hiss, rather than a whistle as long as I have them in - if you know what I mean?

Day 2 with my uppers in.

Last night I drank soup. I tried to eat a slice of bread and that was a disaster. Today I intend to live on coffee, energy drinks and yogurt.

No change in my speech, I speak a lot at work so I am hoping that will help. Yes my ortho did tell me to read aloud.

I am going back to the ortho today to adjust the wire as there is a part in the back really sticking into my tongue, I only feel it on one side so I believe its not cut properly.

Do I regret it? No soon to tell. I am the kind of person that will give any new experience a fair shot before I cast doubt on my decision.

Lets see when I get the lowers in next month.

Hi everyone,

I had the lowers put on today and seem to be adjusting well with them. I thought they were to put on uppers and lowers but got there and just did lowers. Apparently the lowers are the hardest to adjust to.

It took about 2hours to put on and had initial lisp but within the hour no problems with speech at all. I went to have some chicken wings after was able to eat slowly pulling the meat off the bone. It was difficult to eat and time consuming, so soup and other soft foods from now on I guess.

There is no pain yet just pressure of something in your mouth. I will keep posting :D

The more you speak the better it gets so get chatting- practice singing in the car on the way to work.....

From my experience I thought my speech was worse than it actually was- nobody noticed until I pointed out that I had a brace.

as for food- ever time I had an adjustment I just ate soft foods such as pasta, mince potato's.... curry... rice.... etc..
By the end of the month you will be able to manage chewy stuff like pizza and chicken....

To be honest you never forget you have the braces in- but you learn to live with them... they become part of you.... and then they don't bother you any more....
But it does take time to adjust and get used to them.... I would say about a month or so.....

Good luck to all of you..... well done for starting your journey you wont regret a thing....

Hi lisac01

I have to wait 4 weeks to put the uppers in. The ortho said the lowers were the hardest to adjust and if I can deal witht the lowers the uppers are a breeze. Talisman from this site had uppers first and then lowers and seems to be having some speech difficulty and had to start over getting used to them.

yep. Probably not the smartest thing but peeled if off the bone and had small pieces. It took so long to chew. I think I will stick to soup and ice cream for awhile.

Hi,

Congratulations to you all for getting your linguals :jump:

I am a few months down the line with linguals. I really struggled for about a month with lisping, my orthodontist said it would disappear with time but I didn't believe her as I didn't seem to be able to control it at all. The lisp disappeared after about a month and I now only lisp if my mouth is dry, if I'm very tired or have a little alcohol

Good luck with your journey and I promise you your lisps will disappear :-1

Lynne,

Are you already comfortable with them in? Have you forgotten that they are there? Right now my mind is obsessed with them.

Hi Lisa,

It took a long time to get used to them, probably a couple of months. I went through a patch of feeling that I was never going to get used to them. That all did pass and it suddenly all got much easier. My tongue rarely gets sore now (although my tongue still constantly feels the brackets).

I wouldn't say you stop noticing them, but just that you get used to living with them. I am obsessed with looking in the mirror hoping to see changes, and count the time down to adjustments, as I just want to progress quickly - ha ha!!!

They will get easier to live with and you will think about them less as you adjust. The thing I found most difficult was the lisp - that had more effect on me than the soreness - but even that got better after about a month

I don't regret getting them at all, I am so impatient for progress. It's a huge benefit to be able to see the improvements to your smile without having it masked by brackets and wires.

Good luck and keep posting with your progress!
