Hi Katrina

I had top linguals fitted 5 weeks ago. I'm having the bottom done in January.

I took the week off work but I have to say it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I haven't had any pain, just a bit of tenderness occasionally but nothing that requires painkillers.

My speech was hilarious at first, or so my family thought! You soon get used to it and somtimes I know it's bad and other times I don't notice it. I think the more aware I am of it the worse it is. A lot of people have told me they wouldn't have known if I hadn't told them. I've found I'd rather tell people about the brace so if I am talking a little strangely they'll know why. I'd say it was pretty much back to normal after a couple of days but when I'm tired or had a little drink or two it does get worse.

Eating still isn't great to be honest with you. I stuck to soup and 'mush' for a few days. I progresssed to pasta (well cooked though and not spaghetti, that's hard work) after about 5 days and now mainly eat that. Other foods that I've found good are mashed anything, vegetable curry, anything with mince (I'm a veggie and have soya mince so may not be the same with meat) and rice - rice is my saviour! I had some soft pizza a couple of days ago and found I didn't enjoy it, it was just too much effort to try to eat it.

I've lost about 6/7 pounds since getting it fitted and considering I was only 7st 6 to begin with i think that's quite a lot.

One thing that you can have (don't tell your ortho though) is Chocolate buttons - they're the only way I can get a chocolate fix.

Hope this doesn't sound all doom and gloom because I don't feel like that about it all, I do not regret getting them one bit. My teeth have visibly moved in 5 weeks - that more than makes up for not being able to have a Snickers when I fancy it.

Good luck with it - sure you'll be absolutely fine. One thing to mention is I don't know what you know about the fitting but it was so much better than I was expecting, it only took about 15mins to put my tops on. The only bit I didn't like was when I got a slight taste of the glue stuff that they use.

If you have any other questions ask away, I know it can be a bit daunting.

Good luck!!
