Hey everybody I am new here and I am currently under concern about my situation with my Ibraces and havbing orthognathic surgery
My situation:
Hershey, PA
I have a about a 3/16ths of an open bite with a slight but noticeable underbite...I am a 21 year old male with his second set of braces
I have had braces for 13 months and the oral surgeon I approached said that I will need to remove my top Ibraces in order to do this, and replace with traditional braces. My question is if anybody has experienced anything, or that you know about if this is a possibility to keep the Ibraces on(I would hate to have to switch them off as that would cost me more money please I would obviously rather have them hidden.
I went to an oral surgeon(a pretty qualified one at that...Dr. Sudbrink) this past Thursday and he stated that I would have to take the top off, but I am looking to seek a second opinion...because I am really trying not to take them of for the surgery.
So if anybody has experienced a similar situation please comment, or if you know of any alternatives to the surgery that would be great too.
THANKSSSS

Hi, I can't speak for everyone, and each person is different.
I have linguals and am scheduled for surgery on 14 September. Prior to getting braces I was told I would need to have lower ceramic traditional braces on just prior to the surgery. I asked about this at my last appointment, bearing in mind my next appointment is the day prior to my surgery to get the surgical hooks on. He had a look at my mouth and said we should be able to keep the linguals on. He said each person is different and they usually say this upfront, but in my case there would be enough room for them to get in there to do what they need.
I'm not 100% confident this will be the case. I am hoping he doesn't change his mind! My next appointment with my oral surgeon is on 7th September. My surgeon was recommended to me by the orthodontist and they do a fair bit of work together so I'm still hopeful.
But again, this is just my situation and I don't think it's the norm. Good luck.

Hi! Just thought I would post an update. I have my surgery tomorrow so pretty nervous. I went to the surgeon the other day and they were all like "where are your braces?!" so today I went to the ortho and had brackets put on the front (8 in total). They stay until I no longer need the elastics post op, maybe 6 weeks max? So the linguals stay! But yeah, completely depends on your own situation. I know the surgeon was saying my ortho should have done the braces on the outside as they won't be able to fix certain problems. But seriously, I'm 34 and under no circumstances wanted traditional braces! Good luck to you too!
Thats fantastic! and 3rd November isn't far off.. I paid $7500 for surgeon, $1500 for anesthetist, $500 after insurance for hospital and $15,000 for the linguals. And each surgeon visit has been extra, around $600+ so far I think!! Very costly.. (australia dollars)/ Hopefulyl all worth it.
Am at home now less than 48 hours after the surgery. Sleep is hard sitting upright with everything attached, wires, tubes, ice pack round the head ect, but every hour gets easier. Keep me posted how things go for you!

Re: ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY WITH IBRACES....please help
I had jaw surgery with ibraces. They left the ibraces and put ceramic clear braces on the outside of every tooth with hooks. It worked well for me and none of the ibraces were broken or loose post surgery. It was great because I do a lot of public speaking so I could keep the treatment hidden for all the prep work. I think the swollen cheeks, bruising and inability to open my mouth wide made the surgery kind of obvious so who cares if they see braces then. All of this was done in Washington, Dc by Dr. Saba and Dr. Ramsey highly Recommend!

Hi,
I've had lingual braces and my ortho recommended jaw surgery due to my open bite
he said he will need to put my braces on the front because it will be required by the Kaiser Oakland maxillofacial dept in order to
do the surgery.
I guess it depends on everyone but yeah I was recommended to put the linguals back on the front
but only for a few weeks after surgery and until its all good..which should not be much since my teeth are pretty much straight now..
