Going tomorrow.....
ok going to dentist office tomorrow and was getting together a few questions to ask him.Wanted to see if you guys could either help me out coming up with some more or shedding a little light on some i already have.If this is in the wrong section sorry......
ok first off all i'm worried about people being able to see the braces so i am between ceramic, invisalign, and lingual. Now my choice is lingual and what i'll probably get, invisalign i doubt i'll get because i think my teeth are too crooked for them, and ceramic is just inbetween the two...anyway here are the questions i have so far....
Lingual:
1.How much do they cost
2.How long would it take
3.Will they work for me
4.What can i eat drink
5.Do they hurt your tounge and make it hard to speak
Ceramic:
1.How much do they cost
2.How long would it take
3.Will they work for me
4.What can i eat drink
Inisalign:
1.How much do they cost
2.How long would it take
3.Will they work for me
4.What can i eat drink
if you can answer these or think of any more i should ask it would be appreciated....thanks!

Hi
I will try to answer some of the questions. I have lingual braces in my upper teeth and will have ceramics in my lowers soon.
Lingual:
1.How much do they cost: my ortho works with labial, lingual and invisalign. Invisalign was not an option for me but I think the price is similar to linguals (double than normal braces). The price depends on how long you need braces for.
2.How long would it take: in my case is 21 months but depends how much work you need. There is no difference in time between lingual and labial.
3.Will they work for me: the braces that seem to work in all cases are lingual and labial brackets, invisalign is not an option for everyone.
4.What can i eat drink: no problem eating or drinking although it takes longer to eat. I think there is no difference between linguals and labials here.
5.Do they hurt your tounge and make it hard to speak: in my case they hurt my tongue and made it hard to speak during the first week. After that I adapted perfectly and I am very happy so far (for the last 2 months). But I know other people find it more difficult to adapt.
Hope it helps!

you should also ask how much experience your dentist has with invisalign and if he thinks you would do better with an orthodontist. people seem to think that at least 100 cases is minimum to trust they know what they are doing.
I originally asked my dentist about invisalign (he does handle invisalign) but he recommended that I see an ortho b/c my case was somewhat complex and he wasn't comfortable doing it himself.
you will have to do a bunch of photos and molds before they can tell you much about your specific case.

My personal answers to some of your lingual questions.
Treatment time will vary depending on your genetics & case. Linguals will work just the same as labials, so yes they should be able to work for you. If you are a candidate for labial braces then chances are you are a candidate for linguals also, the same doesn't hold true for invisalign. You can drink whatever you want, try to stay away from soda, not only is it bad for you, it also rots your teeth. Eating is difficult w/ linguals but you will adapt & get better w/ time. Linguals should not hurt your tongue if your ortho snips your wires correctly, in fact I actually find my linguals very comfortable.
Speech is the biggest issue w/ linguals, the first couple weeks are going to be hell but stick w/ it because things do get better w/ time. I'm 6 months in w/ linguals & have zero issues w/ speech at this time. I would say I was confident w/ my speech by around the 6th week. If you can make it past the first month in linguals you can make it for the rest of your treatment. Good luck.

Well i went and the guy is not what i'm looking for.First of all he doesn't do ligual (i didn't think he did because i looked up ones who did in my area). So i wanted to see about ceramic because labial is not an option for me and invisalign won't work for me.Anyway he does ceramic but everytime i would ask about them he would put them down and go off about labial braces.......i asked the price on three sperate occasions on ceramic and got a run around and still do not know......so basically it's out of the question with him.....does anyone have an estimate on what lingual would cost?He said labial was 5200 (US Dollars)
Now i went to my regular dentist today (because i've been thinking of gettin crowns on my top 4 teeth to just skip the braces but he told me to check out braces. Now i want braces more than crowns but i will only get them if they are lingual. So i went to discuss crowns today and he told me that he is no expert but with my bite i probably am not a candidate for lingual because i'd knock the brackets off......but after i left i was thinkin....if my bottom teeth would knock the bracket off the back of my front teeth wouldn't my top teeth knock the brackets off of my bottom teeth if i had libial?Does anybody know if this is right because like i said...he told me he is no expert and was just assuming
so i'm going to set up an appointment with a guy who does lingual and if he won't do them i'm gettin crowns....but i'd rather have braces

If you are worried about appearance with ceramics, please rest assured they are quite nice. My family didn't even notice mine until we told them. My uppers are ceramic and the lowers metal. From my experience (having had full metal braces once before), ceramics are a HUGE difference and I am totally happy with the appearance. They do not stain but I do try to stay away from anything that will stain my teeth since you can't whiten them. Invisalign is clear and I couldn't tell someone had them in. To be honest, I wanted invisalign at first, but also wanted the best correction done and only traditional braces will do that for me so I passed on the invisalign. Why don't you get a few consults with some orthos and see what they say. BTW, I am a professional and would have no qualms about getting up in front of anyone to speak with ceramics, so I don't feel it would have any impact on my work whatsoever. I absolutely love the ceramics.
Sorry, I can't help you with the linguals. I believe all treatment times vary with the particular case.

That is BS, I had a horrible overbite & worried about the same issue. Your ortho will give you a bite block placed on your rear molars until your bite doesn't interfere w/ your brackets anymore. No big deal but it really makes it a pain to eat since your teeth won't touch, which makes it almost impossible to grind your food up when you eat. Like I said if you can persevere through all this drama the first month you'll be golden.

I don't agree with this either. My ortho works with all type of braces (lingual, invisalign, labial metal and touth coloured). He said he works exactly the same with linguals or labials, the difference is only the price (linguals twice the price of labial). I have an overbite and have linguals. My front lower teeth touch my brackets when I bite and I have a space in my back teeth, which means it is hard to chew food. But my ortho said this was good because he is trying to move my front teeth up. At the beginning I thought I could break my brackets because I bite them all the time when I eat. I think my ortho uses a very strong glue because after 2 months I haven't had any problem.
I agree with you noob, you would have exactly the same problem with labial braces. But in my opinion this is not a problem because it will help to correct your bite.
I will have labial tooth coloured brackets in my lowers. I have seen photos of people with them and you can see them if you are close to them. But in my case in don't show my lower teeth at all when I talk, mainly because of my overbite. I have a question, are ceramics the same as labial tooth colour backets? I am not sure.

fin - nope..only person who had them was talking to me and she said they were just taken off.I'll see if the next place i go to has anybody wearing them
