Lingual Complete Treatment

#1 Post by dkt3 »

Tomorrow I get my lingual braces off. After 15 months and a few issues they will finally be off. Overall they have been wonderful! (Actually I would rather have not needed braces on the whole). I have had brackets off at the beginning but not many troubles towards the end.

I have loved that I couldnt see them and really forgot they were there. Speaking was something I learnt quickly and no one could tell a difference. Sometimes they were a pain, like all braces, but mostly I forgot I had them. I had linguals put on so I couldnt see the braces everytime I looked in the mirror and they were a good option to fix the problem I had. There were more expensive, but Im fortunate enough for that to not be a concern.

If you have the option to have linguals I would recommend them. They are so discrete and not as uncomfortable as I assumed. My ortho is now trying even smaller linguals which he said will have less impact on speech again. But honestly, speech was only an issue to begin with.

Thanks for the post dkt3!

I'm currently one week away from getting my uppers put on, and i'm still a bit nervous but overall i'm looking forward to getting started.

Do you know the make of your brackets? I'm getting STb's which as I understand it are the smallest currently available, so i'm hoping only for minimal problems with speech etc. I'm guessing you can't really prepare for it, just got to stay in the right frame of mind - "I'm spending money and doing this as a positive improvement on my health, and life"!!!

I'll be posting a few pics next weekend once the brackets are all on.

One question that I do have is - How do they actually put the brackets on? Is it all at once, or one by one?

Cheers
Dave :)

I am not sure of the brand of my linguals but I do know newer ones are smaller than the ones I had.

I had a positive attitude too and just didnt think about them, so I didnt notice they were a problem.

I now have them off which took all of one minute. It felt like my teeth were going to be pulled out! After half hour of polishing off glue and cleaning my teeth were finally free! I had two moulds taken. One for a temp. retainer and another for a real one. I only have to wear my retainer at night pretty much for the rest of my life. Though after a year or so I will only have to wear it a few nights a week.

My gums are a bit swollen from not being directly touched for 15 months but rinsing with salt water has been helping. They are not sore, just swollen. If you are getting linguals I recommend making sure you brush the back of your gums as best you can every time you brush. I did mine all the time and my ortho said that helped.

I have eaten my first meal without them and oh my gosh! Its awesome!!!! My speech is essentially the same, and I can feel my tongue adjusting to the difference again.

All in all, I am finished and so happy!!!! straight teeth! its all been worth it. Linguals have been a great choice for me and I would do it all over again in a second!

Can you post some before and after pics for us?
I'm the owner/admin of this site. Had ceramic uppers, metal lowers ~3 years in my early 40's. Now in Hawley retainers at night!

Congrats, dkt3. One minute to remove, huh?

Good tip about brushing gums, thanks.

Daveyboy, my linguals came in a tray moulded to my upper teeth. The whole set up was stuck on my teeth like when they took moulds, and left there to "set". After a period of time, the tray is removed, leaving each bracket in its designated position.

Hi Daveboy! I have linguals too and I got them sticked on one by one.
It took quite a long time but didn't hurt at all, it was a little inconvenient at the end to keep my mouth open.

Congrats dkt3 for finishing your trip!

dkt- So awesome that you are done and that you were happy with the linguals. I am getting my upper linguals (iBraces) and lower ceramics at the end of November, with a 24-28 month anticipated timeframe, including 2 upper extractions. BUT, I'm excited to have a beautiful smile at the end of it all.

Lionfish - it sounds like you have ibraces based on how you had them put on?? I was wondering, do they fit tight up against your gumline, or is there a bit of space there?

Thanks,
Brady

Brady, there is a bit of space between the gum line and the braces.

Lionfish-

So, how are your gums back there. Do they get swollen? Do you have good enough access to floss OK? Also, how long did it take to get the ibraces put on? Was it uncomfortable at all?

Thanks,
Brady

Brady, I think my gums are OK. I don't get any bleeding when I clean, so that's always a good sign. They may be a bit swollen, but I guess that's to be expected. I can floss all the way up the back fine.

It took over an hour to put the linguals on my upper arch (I have ceramics on my lowers - they went on 8 weeks later). The lip retractor thing was a bit uncomfortable, but that was probably the worst of it. The actual placement of the braces was OK.

I envy u!!!!
I cant wait until i take em off, im still at the very beginning stage of my linguals, but so far i am very happy with them! dkt3 is right! If ur thinking of getting them, just get em!! They are great. And no1 can really see anything! Besides abit of lisp at the beginning, and not being able to eat solid foods for 1 week, there is nothing else you really need to worry about. Well thats me, i guess everyone is different. Alot of people ask me "so when are u getting the braces" and when i tell em i got em they are shocked. So yer monkeys...

Congratulations..

That's not a long time at all. The first time I had braces, I started to get them in the middle of 5th grade and then I got them off at the end of 8th grade. So I had to wear them throughout middle school.

Anyways, I didn't listen to my doctor and I was a rebel then, I didn't wear my retainer. So I'm thinking about getting braces again. I was looking into these lingual ones. How were they!?

Laura, I've had lingual uppers for more than 10 months now and am very happy with them. I've got ceramic lowers - no issues there either.

I was given an 18 month time frame and at this point I'm on track to be done within that period.
