iBraces and a sore mouth!!!

#1 Post by *melissa* »

Hello all, I decided to switch from ceramic braces to iBraces (on top only). I was re-banded 2 days ago and now my mouth (mostly my tongue) is taking a serious beating. I've been doing salt water rinses, but it hasnt worked yet. It feels as if a layer or 2 of my tongue has been scraped off. Eating, even something soft like yogurt, is tortue. Wax doesn't really help because it seriously gets so stuck in between all the ibraces and doesnt come out...so it makes cleaning a pain. I've already thrown out a toothbrush because the wax got all caught in between the bristles. Also, it takes up the tiny bit of room in my mouth, so I can't really talk clearly without it sounded like a stuffed a bunch of food in my mouth.

Any tips or advice would be awesome!

It does get better promise

In the meantime, you could try silicon wax which is harder to stick on but very easy to remove, it comes off in one piece, Dentakit.com does some. I find it easier to remove wax with a tooth pick than a tooth brush, I have a little metal dental pick, which works well.

Keep drinking plenty of water. Could try drinking complan (I had slimfast shakes cause they tasted better) to a meal a day if eating is making your tongue worse - I did this for breakfast for a couple of days.

To treat the soreness, I found Difflam oral rinse and Adcortyl in orabase paste best. They are UK products

Expect a significant improvement after the first week.

Hope this helps

Did they do top and bottom at the same time? If so - ouch! I got my tops on first, and adjusted to them before putting the bottoms on 6 weeks later. The bottoms took a lot longer to get used to- about 2 weeks. Wax was a pain and eventually I gave up on it. You'll get used to it pretty quickly, but if you got both arches at once it may be a bit.
I had my top arch wired for 3 years, 9 months, 3 weeks and 3 days with iBraces
I had my bottom arch wired for 3 years, 8 months, 1 week, and 4 days with iBraces

:D Thank you so much, Rolo! Great tips!!

I love dentakit.com. I ordered the survival kit last year when I was first braced, it was a life saver.

I ordered some silicone wax, a comfort cover (brillant!) and the floss fish (best invention ever!) http://www.dentakit.com/flfltoforbr.html.

I am trying to find a metal dental pick, though I am not having any luck. Where did you get yours?

Volare - yes, they put both top and bottom on on the same day...but I don't have iBraces on the bottom. I figured that would be too tough to deal with. :P

I got mine from Boots.

Just thought are you taking any tablets for pain relief? I work as a pharmacist and there is a significant amount we can do without a prescription, and not necessarily the brands most heavily advertised. I shouldn't give medicines advice outside of work, also I'm not sure what is available outside of the UK, so ask a local pharmacist for the best / strongest combination.

Hope you feel better soon

Today is day 5 with the upper iBraces...my mouth feels sooo much better. I am so happy! Wax is still my best friend though, of course. But, I am talking better too, so yay for that!

Hi Melissa-So glad your mouth is feeling better. Believe me, I can relate!! I have ibraces on the top and bottom and I know what you mean about the tongue-but it does get better!! Regarding cleaning your teeth-I swear by my waterpik! It works wonders and if you get the portable one, it has a special attachment for cleaning braces. I just had my teeth cleaned by my regular dentist, and the hygienist said that my gums, and teeth looked great, and I told her about the waterpik and she said that is the best thing for when you have braces! I also use a gum stimulator to remove the wax (i use the silicone kind too) so MUCH better then the regualar wax. 8) It did take a little getting used to, but once you do, it's a cinch!
