cost reasonable?

I had a consultation recently, and was quoted $13,000. This doesn't even include the cost of having 4 bicuspids extracted and 4 mini-screws implanted by an oral surgeon.

I know that linguals are expensive (I figured something around $10K), but I was still shocked by the price. I don't have a particularly complicated case -- I'm a Class I, and had braces as an adolescent. I actually requested extractions (the ortho said I could get by with interproximal reduction), because my main goal is to reduce my lower profile.

Is this normal? Unfortunately I don't have a lot of options -- I don't own a car, and have to stick with orthos who are accessible by public transportation...of which there are two. My consultation with ortho #2 is tomorrow, but I'm already starting to worry about the cost of orthos who have offices in the city. Is $13K unreasonable? If so, I might consider casting a wider net and consulting with orthos who are waaaay out in the suburbs. If it'll save me a significant sum, it might be worth the hassle of renting a car when I need to.

What do y'all think? Thanks in advance for your opinions.

rybka: $13,000 seems pretty expensive to me. I paid $7,800 for uppers and lowers iBraces in 2007. What city are you in? I live right outside NYC but my orthodontist is near my office in suburban Bergen County, NJ. I was never quoted in the city but Bergen County is a very high cost of living area, so I can’t imagine the cost being that much cheaper. I’d keep looking around for quotes if I were you. If you find a cheaper quote and the orthodontist in the city is desperate maybe they’d be willing to drop their costs, or at least explain why they are so pricey to being with.

That fee does not seem unreasonable to me. I know docs who charge alot more than that.

There are large lab fees and a lot of skill needed to perform lingual braces and they tend to take more chair time. These are just a few of the reasons that the fee is higher.

Once extractions and TADS are involved the case becomes even more difficult which often increases the fee as well.
