lingual braces for an overbite?

#1 Post by carochelsea »

will lingual braces work for me? i have a very pronounced overbite, in which my top teeth completely cover my bottom ones, and the back of the top teeth and front of the bottom teeth touch each other when my mouth is relaxed and closed. will there be space for the upper lingual braces? thanks!!! replies are so much appreciated!

Hey there,

I think to answer this qu definitively you need to go have a consultation...but from what you say I don't see any reason why not?

I had an overbite and when the braces first went on (upper lingual, lower ceramic), the ortho put a couple of temporary filling type things onto two of my top molars to stop me biting straight down onto the bottom brackets, it felt weird to begin with but he removed the built up bits after a couple of months when my bite had started to correct itself.

From being on this forum for a while it sounds like the only issues with not being able to have lingual braces are when teeth are badly twisted so they can't fix the bracket on?

Good luck and keep in touch with what you decide!!

hey jessicamay! thanks for the response, that's very helpful and good news. now i just need to find an ortho in my area who does lingual braces and go in for a consultation! i do have one tooth, my upper right lateral/lateral incisor which is rotated outward and which is the most noticeable imperfection in my smile, and my upper left cuspid is still a baby tooth that never fell out and the grown tooth is there but not coming down without some encouragement! so those are all my problems and i sure hope linguals can help with them since i don't really want visible braces at this point in my life!

I have an overbite and have upper linguals too. Once my orthodontist applied the brackets, he checked my bite and actually filed down the brackets that were in danger of being hit by my lower teeth and he had me keep biting down to make sure nothing was hitting the linguals. The only thing I would say, depending on what your situation is, is if your lower jaw/bite is back far, not to get lower linguals as well. I decided not to get them (I have damon lowers) because I had to get two teeth pulled to make space, which would actually make my overbite appear worse before my jaw surgery, so my tongue, which is already kinda crowded, would have even less room so would most likely be even more sore than it is now just from rubbing on the uppers.
good luck!

Thanks hottpants! I will definitely keep all of that in mind, so helpful, because your situation sounds pretty similar to mine. I've started keeping a list of all the helpful tips I'm getting from this forum!
