just had my upper and lower lingual braces fitted

just had my upper and lower lingual braces (3M Incognito) fitted an hour ago. im pretty excited actually. it's less a mouthful than i was expecting, and it feels pretty smooth all things considered, although i probably think different about that tomorrow
speech is a bit weird, like im talking with a hockey mouthpiece in, but i can see myself getting adjusted to that after awhile. im eating fruit yoghurt now, and its strange that you cannot get rid of little pieces of fruit that get stuck with your tongue.
ive got 12x2 (upper & lower) brackets in total, and only 8 in total on the back molars (4 got extracted, and theres no bracket on the very last one on all 4 sides, which im very happy about. for now, it feels like my tongue has plenty of space still.
my next appointment is in 2 months...
ill try to keep posting updates the coming days and weeks!

so, the first 24 hours are in the bag
so far its been going pretty ok, and alot less hard than i was expecting. eating is a bit of a challenge, but i managed to eat a full plate of pasta (mac n cheese) last night and had scrambled eggs this morning. just finished an avocado. if i dont have to chew too much im ok. the upper and lower front teeth are very sensitive so biting is out of the question. other than that no pain. before i went to sleep i applied wax on most brackets, and mouth and tongue were perfectly fine this morning.
last night the braces started to annoy me, this morning after a good rest theyre not troubling me at all (but i can see that changing as the day get longer). the wires seem to be trimmed very good because theres no annoying poking anywhere. when im doing my thing and not poking around with my tongue i hardly notice braces are there.
speech is all over the place. sometimes i sound almost like my old self, sometimes its pretty awkward. im trying to find the right balance between practising speech and giving my tongue a rest.

48 hours in..
the front teeth are less sore, but still pretty sensitive. i think someone else posted about the importance to stay hydrated, and i couldnt agree more. yesterday i was sipping water/lemonade all day long, and i had no trouble at all, even speech was at 90% i'd say. last night i woke up a couple of times with a dry mouth (probably cause im breathing through my mouth). that plus the fact that i didnt apply wax properly to the back brackets gave me some minor irritations to the sides of my tongue this morning. no ulcers, just a bit more sensitive. that in turns leads to my speech being alot worse, since i dont want to rub against the brackets too often.
but all in all things are fine, doing things like i would normally do.

Hello robbievega,
Congratulations on getting your braces fitted!
It's great that you are adjusting already. I remember that by day 2 i wanted to rip the braces off my mouth as I was so miserable. Now it's all good though, just a bit of patience and practice. And I agree, water definitely helps!
Good luck and keep us posted

hey kitri,
thanks for your reply. how's your progress going? yea ive been lucky with the adjustment process so far. im 5 days in now things are going pretty good. food is becoming less of a problem (ive had chicken, potato's and burrito's), although food getting stuck is pretty annoying (this will be fun with dinners outdoors) and im eating slower than usual. i cant bite either, but chewing is not a problem. talking is strange, altough some moments are better than others. at work ive had a few people looking at me kinda strange when i messed some words up but i dont really care

Hey mate,
You are about a week ahead of me. I'm getting my Incognito tomorrow morning at 9am. Have Thursday and Friday off so a few days to hopefully adjust before work.
So hopefully things will go as well as you. For my last supper I had a steak dinner as I figure it will be as while before I can eat that again. Got my chicken soup in the fridge and just need to purchase a waterpik now. Too late to back out now
It's going to be a bit surreal as I have been reading so many comments on the experience for the last 4 months and no i'll be going through it
Cheers

And good luck to Askme too for your fitting tomorrow!

thank you winwired
quick update: im on my 8th day now. i can eat about anything now except crunchy stuff like nuts obviously. i hardly use wax anymore, i just put some on the lower back brackets for the night, to be safe. last night i had a drink with a good friend who didn't know i had em fitted yet, he was surprised i had em in when i told em eventually, so i guess speech is improving as well
it's safe to say that besides speech, things are pretty much back to where they were before.

Good news Robbie. I feel I've made progress over the last couple of days as I can eat most things as long as I use my back teeth to chew and I cut if up rather than biting into something. My front teeth are way too sensitive to bite into anything.
My speech is still about 95% although reckon as I get back to work and be talking a lot more it will get back to 99%/100%. The only thing still annoying me is the sharpness of the brackets which is grate the top part of my tongue when I speak. Hoping that lessens as time goes by.
Cheers

after 10 days my front teeth arent very sensitive anymore, but i still hardly bite anything and prefer to only chew small chunks of food. the front brackets have never been a problem for my tongue, only the last bracket on my lower right molar is still sometimes annoying me, esp. the wire. might have to get that trimmed some more.
when is your next appointment AskMe? mine is in 7 weeks... feels a bit far in the future actually. if i put my finger on the wire its doesnt feel 'tight' at all and i can bend quite a bit. i wouldnt mind an adjustment in the coming weeks
also, yesterday i went to a birthday-party where a couple of friends were (last week i was thinking about cancelling for this), but not one mentioned my speech
a bigger problem was all the food and snacks that i kept passing up on because it wasnt exactly eatable for me standing in a group of people

You seem to be adjusting quite well. I'm on day 5 and while I can eat most things once I don't need to use my front teeth, I feel my speech is still slurred. No one has said anything at work but I can hear it on certain words and especially towards the end of the day.
What annoys me is the brackets still scrape my tongue when I talk (mainly the uppers) which gets worse as the day goes on so I still wax up fully at night to give my tongue a rest. Hoping to go without soon as putting the wax on is a pain
I get my piezocision surger tomorrow (2-3 survey
). Not looking forward to this at all and will be happy once I recover from this. 2 weeks after this (5th Feb) I'm due for my first adjustment and then every 2 weeks after that for 3-4 month period (after which teeth movement slows down).
I'll post my experiences once i'm done.

im 2,5 weeks in now and surprisingly the back brackets/wire give me no trouble at all, but lately the tip of my tongue is getting irritated by the front brackets. but as you say, apllying a little wax is doing wonders.. i back to eating as before treatment and as for speech, some days are better than others, but it's not something im bothered by. no visible movement so far....

Hey
Thought I'd post on here and share my story of lingual braces so far! Okay so after being turned away for braces at 16, I thought at the age of 24 I would take the plunge and go for it! I didn't want my braces to be visible, hence the reason I opted for incognito (very pricey though!)
Anyway... I had my top and bottom linguals fitted 3 days ago (weds 28th 2015). The first day wasn't too bad but Thursday I wasn't very good at all!! Speech is badly impaired,
Can't eat any solid food and my tongue feels fit to explode!
Just to make it worse, I had oral surgery yesterday to remove an impacted canine, 2 baby canines and 1 premolar. I had to go under general anaesthetic because the impacted tooth is in such a weird angle! There were complications during the operation too, but I survived which is a bonus haha! I can hardly open my mouth today, it is so swollen with blood clots everywhere! Combine this with the sore tongue from the lingual braces and the speech impairment, it is fair to say I am feeling quite sorry for myself! I don't regret having them or the surgery but it's hard to be positive at the moment!
Someone please reassure me that I have made the right decision and things will get better!
I'm glad to see some of you are coping really well and having a positive experience
any tips!!?

hey katie hows it going? uve probably had the worst this weekend and from now on it only gets better
like most people, first days and first week are the hardest. im a little over 3 weeks in and i hardly notice em anymore. sometimes an area in my mouth or on my tongue gets a little annoyed but wax solves that pretty quickly. dont hold back on the wax in the first week!
