Eek! Gum recession!

#1 Post by Svensk Tiger »

Hello all,

Well, I got my lower hooks off today, which is great, but unfortunately I can now see that I have the dreaded black triangles of recession between my central insicors and also between the centre right one and the one next to it. I was doinf so well and had virtually none before the hooks went on so I'm pretty gutted about this. I'm guessing this has happened because it's been such a pain to clean between my teeth with the hooks on.

Does anyone know if this will sort itself out after a while? Can the gum grow back up again? This does spoil the look of my teeth so I'm really hoping that it's not permanent.

Cheers!

Sorry- What are lower hooks?

Are the spaces on the lower teeth or upper and lower?

I have black triangles on my lower teeth. The ortho did some IPR and they became less noticeable but they are still there. To be honest, they don't show when I am talking or smiling because they are down by the gum line so I am not concerned at all.

I really don't think mine are due to gum recession entirely. I think that for very long my lower ( and upper) teeth were very crowded. Being crowded I think they rub together over time. Especially in my mouth where I tend to purse my lips and clench teeth (including in front). So I think my lower teeth actually kind of got worn where they made contact a bit if that makes sense.

Anyway, talk to your ortho. He can do some IPR and make it less noticeable and I think you will be very pleased.

I also don't think you can get gum recession that fast. Which makes me think in my case at least that those teeth were crowded and uncrowding them stretched the gums out a bit.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Hi,

before I had braces, there were some serious gaps between my lower front teeth.
As time passed, this was getting worse and as a result the gums there "lowered"
and revealed the openings more and more.
But when I got braces, the spaces between my lowers was made smaller and indeed,
I had new gum growth between the teeth. Now I have almost no black triangles
anymore. So yes, it is possible your gum can grow back up. And indeed, IPR or
shaving a bit off the lower teeth so that they can be closer together will reduce
these spaces even more and I believe make gum growth there more easily.

Research indicates that it is possible to have reliable growth of papilla into interproximal spaces up to 5-7 mm above the crest of ridge. In English, if the contact of the teeth in question is not irregularly incisally and you do not have much bone loss then the papilla should fill in over time. It is really just a wild guess unless you have pics and/or radiographs and then it is a more reliable guess :D

Good Luck,
Rory

I just had and adjustment last week and ask my ortho assistant if the gums ever regenerate and her answer was no. I was specifically talking about the gum line and it seems I've worn the area on my bottom right side away from brushing too hard. She said the only thing to correct that would be to have replacement gum surgery.
Got my braces off 9/20/07 after 19 months and 3 weeks. WOOOOOOHOOOOO!!

I am not going to hold me breath that my gums are going to grow back either. But if they do I will be on this board letting everyone know!
