I didnt tell anyone but my boyfriend i was getting braces. In retrospect i should have told my parents and family. I need braces to fix my bite and never thought my teeth were very bad. While i was having my braces put on we had a minor family emergency so my brother had to come to the ortho office and he saw me with lip spreaders and the whole nine yards going on. So that knocked the only person who would have said anything mean down a notch or two. Everyone has been really supportive mostly curious as to why someone with such a great smile would get braces. I explain that while my smile was great it was only showing 4 teeth and will be much improved when i unleash my whole smile sans braces.
so to address your question No you shouldnt let what other people think change your mind. but that is easier said then done. thats why i only told the person who was rooting for me to get braces that i was going to do it. I didnt want anyone to talk me out of it after i got up the courage to go for it.

Mike,
It should be fiddler's ##rt, rhymes with heart, but I thought the filter would change it so I changed it myself. Just a little vulgarity between message board mates.

...but i'm spending all this money on myself - i'm just not used to doing that - and it will be so obvious to other people, i mean folks know what this costs.
Ah, I do understand where you're coming from. I did rather shudder at the cost of braces, redoing some crowns, and crowning a couple of additional teeth, for basically "cosmetic" reasons. The total cost (braces plus crowns) is pushing $8K (US) versus around $100 to just pull one tooth and ignore the other alignment issues.

But it's still a lot cheaper than my car, and three years from now I'll have great teeth (both functionally and aesthetically) but I'll be looking for a new car. Heck, the payments on the braces are only a third of the payments on my RX-8!

Maybe once the braces come off I can afford a Mercedes....

I think I understand. Most of us are quick to point out that we are improving our smiles for "functional" reasons as well as cosmetic -that is true in most cases, but we are worried lest people should think we are overly vain. But what if it was for only cosmetic reasons? What is wrong with wanting to look our best? Who doesn't want to look their best? Now, maybe if you have children who are starving because you are buying braces for yourself instead of groceries for your kids -then yes, maybe you are too vain - but if you can swing the cost of braces and even if they are only so that you look better and you don't need them for functional improvement - so what? We all want our outer appearance to reflect more of who we feel we are on the inside.

When it comes down to it - who cares what most people think? When you really think about it - there is probably only a handful of people whose opinion you really, truly respect - the rest of the people you know at work or school, etc. will not be important to you 20 years from now - so do you really care what they think enough to let them influence your actions? Everyone has things they want that others may not understand or agree with. You are entitled to yours, including braces.

Sorry, I'll get off my soap box now!

julie,

We agree, I think. My point about my car payment is that while my car does get me from home to work and back again, that's not why I bought the car. I bought it for the look and feel, not the function.

Same with my teeth: I could accomplish the function at much lower cost, but frankly I want a better look and better performance than I'd get from the "cheap" solution.

But I can afford both the teeth and the car. In fact, I feel a little guilty about the car, because it's quite a carbon load. I think my teeth are at least environmentally neutral. :D
