even more confused!!!

#1 Post by bracey »

ok so I went for my second consltation with annother ortho. today, and now I am even more bewildered as to what to do......he mentioned that if I wanted everything to be perfect with my teeth and bite he said I would need surgery on both jaws!!!!!!yikes!! that sounds really extreme to me, especially as to look at my teeth the uppers just look misaligned and I have a small overbite. I think the reason for it not being a straightforward case is that I had orthodontic treatment before maybe?
this ortho was also more expensive! So since Im not willing to have surgery and I would prefer not to have extractions, he talked about expanding the roof of my mouth and reshaping teeth to make everything fit, but I think I still wont have the correct occulsion afterwards! Now I am thinking of going back to the first Dr. because his treatment time was shorter for basically the same thing.....a cosmetic alignment! and he never mention this spring expander thingy in my mouth?? anybody got any thoughts?????

The first ortho I visited told me that there is not really any other way to fix my deepbite and overjet than a surgery. I visited another one, and now i will get hopefully, my deepbite fixed and my overjet somewhat smaller. I am not doing the traetment because of cosmetic reasons. I was quite happy with the look of my teeth. The deepbite was causing problems.

well for me I would say the cosmetic look of my teeth is 50% why I want to do this the other 50% is for the longterm health of my teeth. Im just worried that after spending that much money Im gonna be unhappy with results :(

bracey, if you can, why not get a couple of more oppinions. I was told I needed bottom surgery for it to be perfect, but my ortho was willing to work to get the best possible results without it. (I must have been close to borderling not needing it?). Anyway, he improved my bite 100%, I just noticed today that I do not have any clicking in my jaws anymore -(been three months since my braces came off - I had TMJ).

Good luck to you.
Had Damon 3 / Smart Clips for almost 2 years
Now in Hawley upper 10 hours/day, permanent lower retainers

Everything depends on what outcome you want.

SARPE, extractions and double jaw surgery were mooted at my first consult for a 100% perfect outcome. I was a borderline surgical case (3mm bilateral posterior open bite being the biggest challenge for my ortho - and me) but chose to do braces alone, being willing to settle for less than 100%. I had one extraction (wisdom tooth, so no gap to close) and a year later am very satisfied with progress. Even if I get 90%, that will be OK for me.
