I have chipped my front tooth

#1 Post by Dr Jon Harrow »

 Hi Guys
as you all know bottom arch is on and top goes on in a couple of weeks, but I keep hitting my top arch against the bottom brackets.
The problem is that i think the bracket material must be very hard, as my teeth are coming off worst in this challenge...they have chipped. i have put some wax on the offending brackets..but any real long term solution ideas from anyone :?:
Bye for now :)

hi Jon

In that instance your ortho will usually put cement buildups on your molars, or fit bite turbos to the inside of your top front teeth. Each of those has the same aim - that of stopping you closing your mouth fully and therefore not being able to bite down onto your brackets.

however, if they are only just touching and you feel you can be careful enough with the help of a bit of wax, you might want to adopt a wait and see approach. Your teeth might move enough in the next couple of months to make intervention unnecessary, I say this because turbos and/or cement bite blocks can make it hard to eat, and turbos can shred your tongue up until you are used to them.

I have a removable retainer/biteplate. IN the beginning I had to wear it all the time, because I was biting my canine-premolar-molar brackets on my right side. THe teeth situation has not really changed but I have learned to be more careful.

You should ask for molar buildups or something!

:) Hi Everyone
I'm really tired, so a quick reply, Ive slept for the past 24 hours, a crohns based virus or something, anyway a little while on the computer, then back to bed...doctors orders...(not mine)
I'm off to see my oral surgeon tomorrow, so I will ask him in the first instance, and then i see the ortho next weds for my top arch fitting.
I seem to be stopping most of the clattering with wax, but i will promise to mention the problem, i do know that my bite is all out, I assumed the ortho also knew that, it was on my report...so perhaps he has been waiting for me to mention any issues :?
So.... :( ..back to bed for me..
I will let you know what the oral surgeon says.

:) Hi Friends
Saw the ortho and the oral surgeon, and they seem to take the softly softly approach, ie see if i can stop doing this, with a little wax to help, but if it does not improve, then yes, bite turbos or something similar have been sugested. By the way does anyone have an answer to this...when i saw the oral surgeon he said i was to stop using my bite plate with the braces, even though i still night grind...any suggestions?
, i would have thought it essential that i still used it...i will ask the ortho on wednesday...its my next B day...upper arch day :)
So the sun is shining :) so Im off to find the easter bunny...who i hear has a large easter egg stash.....ummmmmmmchocolate.
Bye for now

Hi Jon

Im in hampshire to, in Southsea, whereabouts are you if you dont mind me asking? Im having my braces on the NHS are you or are you going private, cos id be interested in someones elses opinion on the NHS round here.

In answer to your question i to am a tooth grinder and before being braced had to wear a tooth shield at night, but once i had my braces on i was told to not wear it anymore as it soon wouldnt fit and still wearing it would have a negative effect on the braces doing there job (im guessing this is because unless you had it remodeled very frequently it would try and push your teeth back into the postion they were in when you were fitted for it)

At times during my treatment my grinding has been worse than ever, but sometimes i stop it altogether, although i have developed an anoying habit of clashing my teeth together during my sleep which isnt great.

Hope that helps abit.

:) Hi Louise
I'm in the north of Hampshire, in Fleet, my orthodontist does NHS and Private, I ended up with a combination. I ve had the better aesthetic brackets and the better 24/7 standard of care, i can call and get an appointment at any time, but this is costing me some extra cash on top of the funding i received because of my other health issues. My consultant was concerned about my losing teeth due to overcrowding and with Diabetes decay, oral problems are an issue, and i would not be able to have a plate, false teeth due to gum issues...so i also get implants on the NHS also.
So are you also getting NHS treatment?... i went to this particular ortho because i did not want to wait 100 years :? for hospital treatment, hence paying towards it...but there are advantages  ...i have purple ligs on my top arch (as of wednesday)...so i have tops and bottoms done now... another friend who has gone totally NHS has no such choices and niceties...I also got another emergency appointment this afternoon because of problems. I'm glad i did not have it done 30 years ago as i should have had...but protested, it was really like that Ugly Betty TV show here then...my sister had full banding...and now has crappy teeth due to decay whilst in braces...oh and her teeth have all moved again because no retainer given post treatment....so I'm glad to have gone it now, rather than in the 1970's.
So are you having your treatment on the NHS because of problems, or do you fulfil other criteria...by the way Southsea a groovy place..i have friends who live on Hayling Island so sort of know the area...well it is just 45 miles away from me here in Fleet. :)
By the way hope the infection and RC has started to sort itself out, hope the ABs worked...i hate RCT
I still keep clattering the top arch on the bottom brackets, the orthodontist has put elastic chain on the bottom, to start things moving :? no real idea why really, it does not make sense...i shall just continue with the wax...I have quite a few chips in the tooth now, its because i push my food up against the backs of the top teeth to chew... a bad habit I cannot or don't know how to stop, i actually thought the ortho would have some idea, but none as yet, the dental surgeon i saw was more use...ho humm i shall ask my dentist when I see her...perhaps she can give him some pointers...sometimes the NHS is so full of amateur practitioners eh? :?
Hope the sun continues to shine by the sea...say hello to the sea from me
Keep in touch bye for now

Hi jon

Hope you are well

Im having my treatment done entirely on the nhs at St Richards hospital in West Sussex (tho i may have to change to a hampshire hospital, which at nearly 10months through isnt great timing! ) I wasnt given the option of going abit private or i would have proberly done the same. My only options were nhs and wait 2 and half years for the start of treatment or pay something like £11,000 and have it all done privately (cost so high due to the complexity of the surgery) unfortanately nor myself nor my family had that sort of money lying around so i was in for a long wait!

Ironically the wait was SO long because my case was complex and severe and needed the attention of only the top orthodontic consultant at the hospital and not one of the orthodontists-meaning mine was properly one of the worst on the waiting list and i had to wait longer than everyone else!

Now im actually having treatment the nhs are ok, getting an appointment in an emergency is near impossible tho. But hey on the up side i do get a choice of colours for my ligs! :D :?

My problems are that i have a severe overbite and an open bite meaning my top and bottom teeth are nowhere near meeting at the front, in fact at one stage i had only 2/3 teeth in my mouth meeting at all as the maloclusons were so bad, combine this with having 2teeth taken out next to each other due to an infection in my jaw bone and apparently i was very eligable for treatment on the nhs!

Anyway enough about that...i hope that your teeth are getting more comfortable, its horrible when they start to move and suddenly hit each other in wrong places but the way ive always looked at it is this means the treatments working.

Take care.

Louise

:) Hi Louise
Well St Richards in Chichester eh? I did an obstetric orientation there, and i have a friend who is a speech therapist seconded to there, i suppose the issues of changing to a Hampshire Hospital are due to the possible closure of St Richards in the near future?
Have you been given a choice on your Hants hospital?...North Hampshire Hospital (in Basingstoke) is v.good I have a friend who is an ortho specialist nurse there,( although on IVF related leave at present)... but she always speaks highly of them there (well she would i suppose), Im at a local ortho in Fleet can't really recommend Him and have since found out from one of my clients, that I may have problems in the future, if i don't keep on to him, basically Her son had been told his treatment was finished there, but had seen another ortho in the meantime..and was told His teeth were far from finished, and ended up with another two years of treatment...help!!, Hope I can get mine sorted, although i can't sort out this chewing biting problem, ie pushing my lower teeth against the inside of the uppers to chew...my oral surgeon can see the problem, my dentist can see the problem..but the ortho well...did not do anything when i mentioned it to him, well apart from adding a piece of elastic to get the lowers moving, (although he did say its a bit soon)...and well that fell off after a while anyway...I need to phone him to sort it out, but need a little more ammunition to work with...hence asking for suggestions here. I have tried changing my bite myself, but you soon unconsiously return to bad habits, without even thinking about it (errrr stupid that why they say unconsiously.).. i need to sleep more... :)
I will keep you informed of progress

Would you have to go to QA in Portsmouth Louise? One of my work colleagues' son gets his ortho treatment there. I am just down the road from you in Fareham :D

Hi jon

Yes the possible closure of St Richards doesnt make the ortho situation any easier, tho on my next appointment next week im going to plead with them to let me stay at St Richards as i really want some continuitity with my care and not have to change now. Also im planning to move back to West Sussex proberly sometime next year and that would mean changing again.

The hospital you mentioned is abit far away and if i do have to switch it will be to the Queen Alexander as Lisa mentions in her post.

Just realised from you ticker that your having your bottoms fitted this week, so good luck with that.
