Elastic yanking teeth out of position??

#1 Post by Kodius Champion »

I posted last week about receiving a double-safety-pin-opener-thingy ( :P ) to make room for my tipped-in molar. Part of the rig was an elastic, worn 24-7, running from my upper canine to my first premolar, and hooked around the bracket of my bottom canine. This is (supposedly) to keep my front teeth from shifting so that my molar can be pushed back.

My concern is this: I've only had this rig a week, and the force of the elastic (they're Heavy, H3) around the bracket on my lower canine has already separated it from my incisors (see the gap in the picture). This happened within 3 days!

In addition, the lower premolar with the hook-bracket seems to be twisting with the force of the elastic, when it was straight before.

Mind you, I'm a chemist, not an orthodontist, so this could be normal/expected. It's just very unsettling. To set my mind at ease, I drove 45 minutes to the ortho's office this morning ... and discovered that they weren't in today!!

I'm not supposed to return until May 17th, and I'm worried that this elastic will screw up my teeth even more before then, so I'll have a tipped molar they can't yet go after AND two teeth that are now misaligned!

Any words of consolation?

Forgot you were a chemist.
I don't know why I mentioned it, as it has nothing to do with my issue and I just as easily could have said, "Now, I'm not an orthodontist, but..."

The chemicals are getting to me. Either that, or I'm just trying to sound impressive. :P

I can't pretend I know what is happening either but I know that you've worked hard for a bottom arch to be proud of and I can understand your concern. Definitely something to get checked out or you'll be fretting and I suppose, that like everything, orthodontics is not an exact science so this may be an unexpected occurance to the orthodontist too.

Yes, definately let your ortho see the changes here.

No doubt he can fix it, but it's just a matter of how far out of whack it gets and how long it takes to put it back.

I agree with most here, that movement is not something to celebrate!
