Too many brackets coming off.

#1 Post by lab117 »

I have been reading this forum for several months now... ever since I got my top braces in December. I have had great luck with the top! No pain at all and no problems.

I got my bottom braces in March and it has been a nightmare. Since being braced, I have had 6 of the bottom brackets come loose. Each time it has been a different bracket and never the same one twice. My dentist is very upset with me assuming it is my eating habits, but as a responsible 31 year old adult, I have not ate anything on the forbidden list. I lost one several hours after my last appointment and all I had had that day with a coffee and pita bread and hummus (I know, terrible diet!). In the last two weeks alone I have had three come off... two were fixed at the last appointment. It may have been my dental cleaning that knocked them loose a couple of weeks ago, but I still feel that this should not be happening.

Has anyone else experienced this? I have yet to have a bracket on the top come loose and I am starting to think that the bottom brackets were just not cured properly when they were put on.

I appreciate any feedback on this!

What brand of brackets do you have?

They are ceramic brackets... not sure of the actual brand.

I agree with the posts above.
You need to talk to your ortho about this. I`ve been braced since march also, but i had a pop-off only once and it was the next day after i got braced due to the pressure of the wire- that tooth was too much crooked. Nothing else popped off since then and i can say i eat and live the way i did pre-braces, only beeing a little bit more carefull now.

If they were bonded and it lasted for more than a couple days then I would rule out any sort of technique or material failure. It is very possible that your bite or some foods that you are eating are causing the problem. Composite (the glue) is very weak when certain forces are applied to it but very strong in other cases. If they pop off immediately/within a few hours after an appointment then I would say there is a problem, but if it is down the road then something outside is causing the problem.

And the comment about cleaning, yes a good scaling and prophy can knock off a bracket. It just takes scaling around an edge of the composite and catching it with a little force to knock the bracket loose. It is not that common but it does happen.

Good Luck,
Rory

I know people who NEVER had any pop of through entire treatment and I've had a couple people tell me they always popped off. I agree maybe it's the glue or something. That seems like a lot of brackets for a short amount of time. I bet it's annoying. I keep worrying about popping one as well but so far so good.

I would have to agree with Meryaten. I went through every single molar band (8 of them) once. It was NEVER the same one twice. I did do some no-nos, but I had braces twice as a youngster & early Adulthood and I pretty much knew how to eat those things on the "No" list.

My ortho never once blamed me. (though I blamed me!) After figuring out that it was every single molar band that had been originally installed, and they never came off again, we determined that the molars were not dry enough when cemented.

I doubt that you had ANYTHING to do with it!

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I am hoping that once my brackets have be replaced that they will stay on for the duration of the treatment. I do expect the odd bracket to come off, but not the majority like I am experiencing. I know I will be charged at some point if I am found responsible for causing these loose brackets, which seems to be the way my ortho is leaning on this problem.

I have emailed my orthodontist about my concerns, but he does not reply to his emails. Hopefully things will be resolved soon.

ARRGH! That's horrible! Something else I can start worrying about...lol!

Oh, I know it's not something that happens often and it I shouldn't worry about what may not happen...but still... :ouch:

I've had only 1 come off, but if came off a few hours after having an adjustment. I've eaten lots of things I probably should not have too, including ribs!

I've had one bracket pop off while manually brushing my teeth. It was a week or so after being braced and was warned that one would probably come off. It wasn't because I wasn't careful, it was just too much pressure on my wayward molar. After 2 months, it's back on the rack!
Upper and lower 1st premolars extracted
Uppers braced 4/6/07 & Lowers braced 4/20/07
ceramic brackets and rectangular arch wires
Est. term: 30-36 months
De-banded: 3/04/09 w/ LBR and U&L Essix

Were you warned because of the problem w/ the molar or because it happens so often to everyone?

Does that molar have a lot of reconstructions (big fillings or a crown?)?
Meryaten,
Not at all, the molar is my natural teeth, no fillings or a crown, the pre-molar that lost the bracket though did have a filling and the bracket sits right on the filling; the Ortho had roughened the exterior of the molar each time she has replaced the bracket, but she refuses to add a molar band as she is anti-molar bands...
