I have always had a TERRIBLE time with any impressions because I would gag almost to the point of throwing up from the stuff in the back of my throat.
My orthodontist this time used a numbing spray before doing the impressions. There was NO problem (and each impression took 3 minutes...it was for Invisalign) once my mouth was numb. And, it wore off in like 20 minutes.
So, if you have problems with gagging, ask your dentist/ortho to spray you first...it works great!
Are you a 'gagger'? Ask for the spray!!

Boy, Talk about gagging , I'm a gagger from day one. When I had impressions done the assistant resorted to tickle and snap on my my ears and I was so involved in that I forgot about gagging. But I asked about getting numbing spray and the assistants said to breathe thru my nose and to relax and it will all be in a minute or two and it was! But I did ask about extra flavoring ( cinnamon ) and I think that helped a little to.

I don't know for sure what it is called, but I googled it and came up with this link:
http://www.dental--health.com/gagreflex ... ntary.html
My guess from this information is that it would be called Benzocaine spray...but ask your ortho!
Hope this helps.
