They Still Hurt

#1 Post by ceeceebraces »

Hello,

My board name is Ceeceebraces and I just joined.

Actually, I joined last week, but have been having tech problems posting.

Okay, so I got my braces (ceramics) on last Friday afternoon. As alot of people I'm sure, I told them to take them off, lol. The ortho had to assure me I wouldn't notice them in a couple of days and the rest is braces history.

But I have noticed them. I'm okay, it's just that the ceramics scratch alot, because the edges are pretty rough. At times, it feels like there are prickly's in my mouth, and other times it's like they recede back into my mouth as if the prickly's are retreating.

Now I have a big bump on my lower left side. It's sore and annoying to eat on that side. I'm taking Anbesol, which I recommend, but it's a temp relief, of course.

Anyone else having this much discomfort? I'll handle it, but I'm surprised there's this much going on a week later.

Glad to be here!!

(17 months, 3 weeks to go ).

HYDRATION Is the key term to trying to avoid things such as... As a firefighter we have to stay hydrated no matter what cause when we enter the burning buildings alot of that hydration we had we lose alot of it.

EVERYTHING Uses Hydration:

Rehydration, the replenishment of water and electrolytes lost through dehydration.

The biological absorption of water by plant tissues, often resulting in a shape change.

The organic Hydration reaction, a reaction in which water is added across a double bond

Mineral hydration, a reaction in which water is combined into the crystalline structure of a mineral

Thanks guys.

I have been drinking water, swishing it around my mouth and all, but maybe it still hasn't been enough. I will just have to step it up.

I'll use the salt water for any sores too.

Ohhh, okay...so it takes about a month to adjust. You know, I'm actually loving it a little more every day. I was looking at them in the mirror a bit ago and saying to myself how happy I finally got them! I'm getting psyched out, because I basically feel adjusted social wise, look wise, money wise. The money part can fall through, due to the uncertainty of the future of my job right now, but I got tired of waiting and waiting because of one thing or another. I'll just keep saving for a rainy day and go on with my life, not letting obstacles stop me anymore.

Is it okay to use Listerine regular mouthwash? That's what I've been using to help keep the plaque at bay.

Is it also cool to wipe petroleum jelly across your braces? I find that helps to soothe the roughness too.

I use Listerine every day, but I always dilute it roughly 50/50 with water. If you have sores in your mouth, the strength of the listerine will probably not feel too good on them. I find that if you dilute it with water, it doesn't have that "ouchie-burny" feeling in your mouth. Full strength listerine also tends to dry out my mouth, but that doesnt happen when I dilute it. I use the good old original yellow stuff that everyone else seems to hate, too! lol! :D

Ceramics are a little rough for the cheeks, so you will notice them until your cheeks and lips get used to them. It was until my second week that they became a part of my mouth and I forget that I have them on sometimes. I'm so thankful because it was a real pain!! I used orajel to numb my raw cheeks and it did the trick. just hang in there....it will get better.

Hi Ceecee,

I've had braces (lower only and metal) for just over two months and my mouth is almost always sore. Some days it's my cheeks, other days just my inside lower lip and other days it's both. I do everything that KK suggests, including lots of salt water rinses, but it still happens. I do use the wax and that helps tremendously, but it's a real nuisance because I have to redo it everytime I eat and brush my teeth - at least 3 times a day. That takes the pain away instantly, though, so when it's bad, it's worth the trouble.

I really appreciate all the good advice given here and have already used it, especially drinking more water.

I developed a bump on the gum on the bottom left side. Anyone else experience that? I heard I could get canker sores, but this is a swelling.
It's gone down some but taking a number of days to go away. Was pretty sensitive when my tongue would touch it, but better today.

I am getting used to the braces more though.

I had a hard and sory, tiny, bony bump for about two or three days my second week in. I have no idea what it was, but my ortho said it was fine as long as it went away in a week or so, and it did.

Weird, but ok.

Hehe.

I had a really sore, bony, hard bump on my gum too that formed about 3 days after I got my braces on. I think it was from the "hook" part of one of my brackets (where I'll eventually hook elastics??) irritating my gum. I used lots of warm salt water rinses and put wax on that bracket and it was gone within 2 weeks. (thank goodness, that little sucker hurt!)
