How big can an orthodontic failure be ...

#1 Post by Clo »

Hi all,

within some weeks, my new treatment should start. I have now been sans
braces for about 8,5 months. I realize there are many new members here
who can't know my orthodontic history.

Therefor some background here :
Ortho 1 worked on my teeth during 22 months. She lined up everything but
completely ruined my bite. I got a bad open bite and a big overjet. My bite
was a real disaster. I left and went to ortho 2. He tried for about 8 months
to correct the overjet and open bite. He finally admitted it wasn't working
at all. So I went to see a third ortho. I posted since the beginning of this all
here in this forum. A lot is still here I think. It makes of me one of the oldest
still present members of ArchWired !

Ortho 3 took off my braces in November 2006. Since then, I've been waiting
to start a new treatment. During that time, I only had an upper Hawley. But
it did not exactly help very much. My teeth look now so bad. Never been
worse. I am almost ashamed to show these pics. This is not really how teeth
should look after 30 months of braces, a gigantic amount of elastics and also
a headgear. It seems vertically I had a total relapse so once again I now have
a very open bite. Also about all alignment is gone. When I bite down, I only
have contact between the left first molars. So, this is not back to square one,
this is back to square -100 :

In both pics, I completely and utterly bite down.
Now, August 8th, they will install again braces. Only on my upper teeth first.
Then, after some weeks I'll have a surgery where they'll insert bone anchors
in the zygoma. They'll use these to pull all my upper teeth backwards and to
intrude all my upper back teeth. This to correct my class 2 bite and to close
my bite. They told me it will be a very difficult treatment. So, this explains
why I feel restless these days ...

oh my goodness Clo, I never realised how bad things were for you! No wonder you feel "restless" as you put it.

There's nothing I can say to you that will help, but I'm holding out hope that this new treatment will give you the results you want and deserve.

Do keep us posted on what's happening. The bone anchors will hopefully do the job. Us old AW members are all cheering you on, I'm sure!

Hugs
Lisa

Wow Clo, I would have so many emotions that it would be hard for me to describe. I am sorry that you have had a bad experience so far and for it to last almost 3 years and to end up worst than you started. I hope that you have faith in the up coming surgery that you are going to have. Maybe you should get another opnion (if possible) from a 4th orthodontist before jumping into surgery.

:flowerbloom: Wishing you the best of luck!!!

Wow, Clo, each time you post I think about how much youve been through and how much patience you've had. Looking at your pics, however, I understand why you haven't given up; that's a tough bite to live with. I wish you all the luck in the world for your upcoming treatment and surgery; hopefully this ortho will get things under control. Have you been given an estimate on treatment time yet? Also, your lowers look pretty good in the pics you posted, what's the plan for them?

What I find amazing is how you still have any sort of a positive mindset. I don't thing I would be anywhere near positive after going through all you've been through. I also agree with Meryaten, your teeth and gums look great.

Mike
I wore braces (this time) for 1294 days or 3 years, 6 months and 17 days.
But who's counting?

Thanks for praying for me and thinking happy thoughts.

Clo- That so majorily stinks that your teeth have shifted that much since Novemeber. I truly hope that the next round of treatment will bring an acceptable result. At the present time, your anterior open bite looks worse than mine was before surgery so I know how frustrated you must be. I had aligned teeth and a decent bite when I had my first round of braces removed in the mid 1980s, over the years my bite opened into an anterior open bite simlar to yours because my problem was skeletal as you know. I had 4 teeth extracted (first time with braces) and the front teeth pushed into those spaces (which didn't work with my skeletal condition). I had headgear and elastics the first go round so you might say I had a huge orthodontic failure in the mid 1980s too (but in my case jaw surgery wasn't the option it is today). I just keep holding out hope you have found the solution, I know there is one out there. I want to see you brace free too and smiling wide in another year (or two). You deserve it, so deserve it! I also applaude you for having the courage to post your pictures here as they help provide members with an honest look at the many sides (up and downs) of orthodontic work.

Clo, I am in my third year of treatment. This is my second time in braces after ortho 1 didn't do a good job. He used an expander when the only option was really to extract teeth. I will have my braces off in a year, hopefully.

I really, really wish your treatment goes well this time around (third time's a charm?). You, more than anyone here, deserves the perfect teeth that you seek. Good luck!

Clo, I have been following your story since I became a member here.

I can't say anything that someone else hasn't said much better. I just wanted to convey my support and admiration for you, and my best wishes for the next leg of your orthodontic journey. I'll definitely be looking for your posts and keeping you in my thoughts as you move forward in your treatment! I too will be looking forward to seeing a positive resolution for you in the coming year (or whenever you achieve that).

Hi Clo,

I went through failed orthodontics as a kid. My parents spent thousands of dollars, and I had two perfectly healthy teeth extracted which not only didn't help, but left me worse off. So now I am two years into my second round of treatment and had surgery 4 months ago. It is going really well because I am finally in competent hands. I hope the same for you.

Oh Clo. :(

I've been reading your story since I came to archwired, pretty much. You've been through so much....there's not much I can say. All I can do is that I'm crossing my fingers and toes that this treatment plan works out for you and that you finally get a functional and satisfying bite and appearance. You deserve it more than any of us on this site.

Hi clo!

Just wanted to say that I admire your perseverance!!!

I hope everything finally falls into place for you this time.

Did the first ortho give you any form of refund for your failed treatment?

Wow, so many replies full of so many nice words !
Thanks ! I really really appreciate this. It somehow makes the journey a bit less
hard. Many thanks !

@ Lisa65 : I keep following your story in all details. Because the method they
will use to retract my uppers is a bit like yours. Other bone anchors, but the
idea is a bit the same. I surely will continue to post.

@ Carolinahigh12 : I did about exhaust all the orthodontic possibilities here. The
place where I go now is a big university where orthodontists graduate. If these
people don't know how to treat me, I guess nobody will. At least that is what I
hope ...

@ Jillianleab : not an exact planning, no. But the oral surgeon said the total
treatment could take up to 4 years. I hope it will be less, but know at the same
time it will take a long time. My lowers will be braced later on. They are indeed
better aligned, but do not fit at all into the uppers. The whole arch will need a
change of form.

@ jt2lang : yes, surgery is the other option. A 3 piece Laforte surgery. They
would disconnect the upper jaw, make 3 pieces of it and reposition it all. I know
the bone anchor method will reveal very quickly if it works or not. If not, this
surgery will be my last option. My open bite is dental. Maybe a tiny bit skeletal
too, but this should still be in the range of being orthodontically correctable.
I know my ortho wants in fact a relapse. She says it will be easier to start when
my teeth are given a resting pause. So, she knows what is going on. She mailed
me some months ago to stop all retention.

@ Meryaten : ah, Meryaten, always happy to see replies from you ! Thanks for
the nice words. You remember about that premolar root. Well, no change there.
Not worse, not better too.

@ iBorg : yes, my mindset is still positive. Because I can put it all in perspective.
We experienced so many big tragedies in our family the last years that I keep
thinking, yes, this is bad, but it only are teeth. Maybe hard to tell this that way.
And of course this forum helps a lot too. Talking about it helps too. The audience
is always great here !

@ Dimples : no, not a refund from ortho 1. Not even a conversation about what
went wrong, or a phone call to know how I am doing now ...
