Possibly going into braces for the 2nd time at 44yrs. of age

#1 Post by discomom »

Hello, I am possibly going back into braces at middle age. I have a consultation on Aug. 7th. For those adults in braces, do you know of how it works if you have periodontal disease? I have a tooth that is really elongated because of loss of gum. I was just curious how that was handled if that was your situation. Any advice would be so appreciated! Thanks Lori

Thanks Karen! I just had a cleaning at my regular dentist but they didn't really seem too concerned about the tooth that has the recessed gum. He said that it hasn't gotten any worse over the years, and I have lost no more bone. I am just worried that I am going to have to go through a lot of extra procedures before braces are considered and I am afraid I will lose my nerve! UGH??! I just want to get this appointment over with so I quit worrying. Lori

I'm 10 months into treatment and 56 years old. My top teeth have straightened out nicely but the gum lose is evident. I have those horrid black triangles between several of my top teeth. At one visit my ortho said something about post braces surgery and then at my last appointment he said he'd have to send me to a dentist to have bonding between these teeth. I'm not thrilled about this and I don't like the way my top teeth look. Please ask lots of questions before you begin treatment. No one thought to mention things might be less than perfect when I began treatment. I'm about to call and ask some more questions before I worry myself to death. Good luck.

Neelie, OMG that sounds disappointing! I hope that things work out and I am sure that they will. I appreciate your advice and I will definitely use it. I am worried about this tooth and of course, I am getting myself worked up before I even have any information! I hate when I do that!!! I wish you the best of luck and please keep me updated on your progress! I will do the same. My appt. is Aug. 7th. I will post and let you know what I find out. Thanks again Lori
