Got my (clarity) Braces Today

#1 Post by gotjessica? »

Well, after several weeks of addiction to this forum, I've gotten up the courage to join and actually post!! I joined the forum because after years of avoiding the dentist and being in denial over my need for braces, I took the plunge and decided to get braces. This action broke a promise a very scared and younger me had made herself but in the long run, braces are only going to benefit me. One week from now I'm getting all ceramic braces, clarity to be exact, and frankly I'm scared out of my mind. Just having turned fourteen yesterday, I know i have to be more mature about the situation so, I'll stop my rambling.

Hello, Jessica,

Welcome from another newbie!

I consider this board to be good therapy--OK, I suppose addiction is another way to look at it. :D

Happy birthday for yesterday Jessica, and congratulations on your decision. You will find lots of support on this board. It's natural to be apprehensive about a major upcoming event, but I can almost guarantee that in a couple of weeks' time you will be wondering what you were so worried about. :D

Hi gotjessica?. You will do just fine. If i can do it (I've had braces for 6 days now) anyone can. I Just made sure that my ortho told me everything he was doing so that I didn't freak out :).

I made a promise to myself at a young age that no way was i going to get braces! But here I am and even though the first couple of days where uncomfortable the weird tension feeling goes away and eventually things go back to normal, you get used to the strange "i'm wearing a mouthguard" feeling. You even begin to like the "strapped" in feeling your teeth have. Like there is no way these suckers will ever fall out! :) It's comforting.

The first time you look at the braces on it does seem like they are overly large. The arcwire (in my case on the bottoms) goes up and down and really highlighted to me how badly crowded my lower teeth were. But you get used to it and when people look at you and say i don't really notice them, it really makes you feel better!! My fiance said they even suit me (I must pay him well )

What i can suggest is buy lots of wax just until your lips get used to the brackets (took me 3 days), and slop on the lipbalm!
I also had some pawpaw ointment (thats what its called here in Australia, red round cylindrical tub) and rubbed that on my upper and lower gums at night, which was soothing.

Soup, porridge, custard, mac and cheese and sheperds pie are my current diet. AND because i am a serious! sweet tooth i bought some chupachups to lick (don't bite!).

Good luck! and let us know how things go!! You'll be just fine and you're not alone!
