6 days so far .... 18 months left

#1 Post by Tanj »

Hi :),

I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm 29 from Australia and was braced on Monday! Yep thats right 6 days ago. It's been a bit of a whirlwind for me. I went to the dentist on the 18th July was referred to the orthodontist next door who slotted me in during his lunch break the next day!!. Lucky for me he's at the practice in my town on Thursdays only (the other times he's in the city). So i saw him on Thursday and he was fantastic! Made me feel calm and relaxed was friendly and told me NO extractions, which made him my instant friend. So the next step was making an appointment to get my braces.. well lucky for me someone had canceled for Monday!..

..and tadaaaa here I am 6 days later with a nice set of ceramic uppers and metal lowers. And why you wonder am i boring you all with my story. Well this morning while sitting in front of the computer researching my heart out about braces and what to do and why in gods name my ligatures had turned yellow! (damn the curried eggs!) one of my brackets popped off . It felt like one of my teeth had popped backwards. I freaked! sweaty palms and worried that I had forever ruined my chance of straight teeth (I guess I am still a bit fragile after having these large things placed on my teeth! Just called me stressbunny).

Anyway... I wanted to say thank you! If it wasn't for this site I'd still be freaking out and wondering what in gods name i had done wrong. Did i brush to hard.. did the itsy bitsy pieces of carrot i had that morning do something to my bracket.. or maybe it was the veneer i have on that tooth!? Well now i still don't know exactly why the bracket has popped off BUT at least I know I am not the only one and these things happen. I'm calling tomorrow to get slotted in on Thursday to fix the problem.

SO... after all that Thank you all for helping me ease my way into the next 18 months of braces! Yay :jump:

G'day tanj,

I'm in Sydney. You'll find a growing Australian contingent on the board.

Yep, the turmeric in curry mixes stains white ligs really bad (glow in the dark green). Try silver next time round.

I've had a few brackets pop off. Sometimes the glue doesn't set properly. Not a big deal, btw.

Good luck. You'll find the time passes really quickly.

Thank you for your welcome!! :) I'm in Brisvegas!

Some people have mentioned the glow in the dark, pearl or of course the silver or "smoke. I'm going to scrounge the internet and see what works best.

At this stage I'm still getting used to the appearance of braces on my teeth but as I get more used to them I'm sure i'll start to experiment with colours! I'm a fanatic when it comes to nice bright colours so maybe i'll off set some pink ligatures with a few pink hair extensions!!

I must admit i really do miss biting into things. At this stage its still a tad tender to chew but I don't have the braces all the way into the back of my mouth so i have four teeth (two up and two down) on each side that i can use to at least mush up some of my food. And i tend to rub my tongue over my teeth . All in all if this is the way things will go for me over the next 18 months i'm in for a good ride (cross fingers)!.

Thanks for the advice KK i'll check out the "braces newbie" articles you mentioned.

It was pretty quick wasn't it bracedagain, and you are right if it hadn't happened this fast i would have stressed about it for weeks! I'm into my second week now and everything is going very well! I even think one my teeth has moved slightly already, or mayby i'm just hoping but whatever it is it's keeping my spirits high! :) Thanks for the advice.

KK It's back to being cold now :D You didn't miss out on to much.

I might investigate those teflon coated ties you mentions just as an option so that I don't have to worry to much about staining. I've actually noticed that people mention how they or a family member have had braces more now, before it wasn't really something i thought about. But you're probably right, other people are probably to preoccupied to really care as much as we do about our braces... i should just go way out and get pink!. I'll let you guys know and maybe post a pic if i do :). I keep wondering if the pink will look too "gummy" or bloody.. LOL. We shall see.

Freaky stuff KK but I'm in the process of reading that thread right now! I'm up to page... 10 of 35 *lol*!. I'll work my way through it. Still haven't found a picture of the "pearl" ligs BUT have fallen in love with this fuchsia. I adore your purples too though, and the aqua *YUM*!. I want my 1st adjustment to be tomorrow!!! i don't think i can wait another 4 weeks.
*sigh* :D
