Which route to take?

#1 Post by Vyse »

Ok, i went to the dentist today and asked about getting braces, he said he would refer me, but would take about 6 months for a letter through the post from the ortho. Personally i think this is a long time, should i go out and book consultations myself at ortho's instead as it would be quicker?

It can take ages with the NHS but at least it is free. My youngest daughter had to wait well over a year before the ortho saw her. Do chase the ortho from time to time though in case they forget about you!

no it is gonna be private, the doc said it would cost around £2k. I think 6 months is along time to wait for a private ortho

You don't have to wait for your dentist to refer you if you're going private. There are fewer orthos in the UK, but I only had to wait about 3 weeks for an initial appointment and then about 6 weeks before I got the braces.

Look here for a list of orthodontists in your area, and phone some up. Unfortunately consultations are not generally free in the UK (I paid £70), but hopefully you could ask some questions over the phone before committing to an initial appointment.

They mostly offer interest-free repayments. I paid £700 up front and the rest over 12 months.

My ortho allows you to pay in quarterly installments over the whole treatment, slightly loaded at the front. so I will be paying mine off over 18 months.
