Newbie's first silly question!

#1 Post by Mesha »

Hi everyone... When you first got your braces on (I just got mine yesterday), did it hurt like mad to brush just certain teeth?? When I brush, it's mostly fine but when I go over certain teeth, I get the most horrible shooting pain. Did any of you notice this? I was expecting the achy kind of pain and I can handle that, but this is different and sharp and so it's got me a little paranoid.

Thanks for any insight!

I don't recall this happening immediately. However, there have been times when I found that brushing around a particular molar caused sensitivity. I wouldn't call it the kind of pain you're experiencing though. Perhaps you're brushing too hard? Failing that, ask your ortho for advice.

Not sure if it's the same pain as you're experiencing, but occasionally after appointments, i'll find it hurts to brush, but i put it down to the roots moving around and really not wanting to be touched by external pressure. If it doesn't ease after a few days, I'd follow lionfish's advice and check it out with your ortho - good luck with your new braces btw!!

Thanks so much for your responses, guys! It wasn't as bad this morning, but I think I will still invest in a tube of Sensodyne, see if I can't make it go away a little more.

Its not unimageable that some teeth are moving more than others and therefore they're more sensitive. I second KK's suggestion of Sensodyne toothpaste. As much as I brush, my mouth couldn't tolerate regular toothpaste. I got sores from the chemicals in it.

That definitely has happened to me. My front middle tooth was the sorest for the first few days after my last adjustment. Now, it's fine, but another one is piping up with some ouchiness.

I like to think of my teeth as little people...and they're taking turns! ;-)

Yeah. It hurt a lot at first. It definitely gets better, though.

Thanks, guys. Feels much better knowing I'm not the only one! I got the Sensodyne and I've just been brushing super-lightly over those few teeth that are giving me a hard time.
