uk member needs help

#1 Post by badbyte »

hello just a few questions if anyone can help me with?
i havent been to see a dentist in years and now i want to push myself into getting what i've known i needed years ago...... a Brace!

first question is it possible to get it done through the nhs?, i've got plans that if i cant get them through the nhs i'll save up and pay for metal ones myself with a private dentist, now heres the Big but.........having read through the forum i also realise that i may/will need jaw surgery to correct my underbite:(.

Now this is something that i would not be able to afford to pay for myself , if i cant get braces through the nhs and i go private instead would they also expect me to pay for private jaw surgery as well?

It's possible, but not very likely that if you went down the private route that you'd be able to get jaw surgery on the NHS. You might get braces on the NHS if you satisfy the IOTN (Index of Treatment Need). You can find more info about that here http://www.dentalgain.org/orthodontics.html

IF you haven't been to the dentist in years then that's your first port of call if you want NHS treatment. You'd have to get a referral from an NHS dentist, so if you haven't got one, best start looking as they are hard to find these days!

If you decide to go private, you can self-refer to an orthodontist, but they will in all probability ask you to visit a dentist first and get your teeth checked out so they are in tip top condition before getting braces.

Good luck with your mission.
