Getting braced for 2nd time tomorrow, feeling worried!

#1 Post by pearlywhites »

Well, tomorrow I will be getting braced for the 2nd time at the age of 27, first time was age 13. Can hardly belive I am doing it all again! Originally I planned to straighten my smile with veeners, but my dentist thought it was not such a great idea and suggested more orthodontics instead.

After much deliberating, I have decided to go with fixed braces instead of Invisalign and will be getting Clarity uppers and metal lowers. I have quite badly crowded upper teeth and minor crowding on the lower set. Estimated treatment time is 12-16 months.

During my consultation my ortho took x-rays and pointed out that I had a couple of teeth with "blunted" roots, which I later found out is actually root resorption. Apparently, this has been caused by my first round of braces. After reading through other posts on this forum about root resorption, I have become really worried that I may lose these teeth through having braces again. I have since talked to my regular dentist about this and to my ortho who have both said that as my lower teeth don't not require much movement it should be ok. I hope they are right!!! Anyone else with the same problem/concerns?

Anyway, I have managed not to cancel my appointment despite my anxiety and am due at the orthos tomorrow morning.

I have found this site to be soooo helpful and have spent hours reading through all the different topics/posts. Thank you to everyone who posts on this forum, you are amazing and I really admire you all. Hope my journey in braces goes as well as the majority on here and the results are worth it.

Hoping to make some new friends on this site and share experiences and advice. Best wishes to everyone xxxx

:D

I'm almost 27 and this is my first time in braces. But talking to my friends and sister who had braces over 10 years ago alot has changed. So hopfully this time around will be easier and a lot more painless for you.

Just ask for an X-ray after for example 6 to 8 months to see everything is still ok.
Then you will be certain. But since only 12 to 16 months is needed, and not a lot
of movement is needed for those teeth, you'll do just fine.

Thank you for the replies everyone, you have made me feel a lot better. It is so reassuring to be able to talk to people who understand. Braces on now!!! Told my ortho I was nervous today and he immediatley knew why and said he wouldn't treat me if he thought it would be a problem. Can feel a lot of pressure, just waiting for the pain to come now! Feeling much better about everything and pretty excited! :D

Thank you KK, you always seem to post such helpful and poisitve responses. Fingers crossed that I will be pain free too, just like you! So glad to hear you have not suffered with pain so far. I guess I'm just expecting it again because of my past braces experience which made my teeth very sore a few times. I will stick to your advice and hope for the best. Thanks again!

Congratulations on getting your braces! I am in them for the second time as well, but I am A LOT older than you. I am 44 now, the first time I had braces I was 14 so it's been several years ago. I am glad to hear that you have no pain. My pain set in on day 2. I happy you have started your journey!! Lori
