weird metallic taste...

#1 Post by ladyg »

hello folks i wonder if any of you can help me. for the past two/three weeks ive had this weird and horrible metalicy taste from one side of my mouth. it comes and goes but i cant taste it when im eating or anything.

its so annoying! ive had a look on the net about it and most folk say its medication that causes it but im not on any meds. it seems to be only from the one side of my mouth and the more i swallow to get rid of the taste, my mouth produces more!! :?

could it be anything to do with my braces, ive had then in just over 4 weeks??

thanks

Can you track it down to any particular spot in your mouth? Do you have any gum areas which are painful/swollen/bleed easily? Run your finger along the edge between tooth and gum and sniff it. Sorry it's gross I know, but is there a nasty smell anywhere? Do you have molar bands? Do the same sniff test.

Taste perception can be tricky, but it's just possible that you have a small inflammation in the gum somewhere, or if you have bands it's just possible that the cement isn't sealing the band properly and allowing particles of food to lodge under the band. The "sniff" test should show up if there's a problem.

Other than that, I'm not sure what to suggest.

Medications, specialy antibiotics, can cause a metallic taste but that normally is an overall taste not just on one side. When I had a rotting root that produced a bad metallic taste on that side and when I sucked the taste was much worse as I was sucking out the bacteria so it might be worth going to see your dentist.

Another thing that produces a metallic taste in some women is pregnancy.

Lisa65 is likely correct. Use a waterpick, or better yet, the QuickPik or Oral Breeze to flush out around the molar bands. If it is gone for the day and then comes back, it is likely a pocket where your molar band is collecting food and it is rotting in there. This is common.... If it truly is this, then the offending band should be re seated.

I would HIGHLY suggest getting one of the Oral Breeze piks that are on this site!!
