I went through none and almost a year in braces. Yeah I thought that that stuff is nasty.. Hmm holding my breath and breathing through my mouth maybe . no really my mouth never gets sores now.... Thats great!!

I only have top braces on right now. I've used 1/2 a tinny winny box. I get my bottoms on soon (16 days.) I estimate I'll finish this box after I get my bottoms but that's it for my whole treatment!! Whoo Hoo!!
I have used so much wax and now silcone I should have stock in the darn companies. About 4 weeks ago I learned how to apply silcone and now use only that if possible. I also buy the plain ear wax plugs someone on here suggested. Its way cheaper for the amount I use. I thought by now I would be use to my braces, but it isnt happening. My bottom wires just dig perfectly in to my mouth. The wires dont actually cut the skin, just make it so irrated I cant stand it. I still try to brave it out once in awhile but now am learning to just give into the waxforce. The only times I can get away with not using it is on the weekends when I dont have to talk as much as at work.
I used quite a lot of silicone wax for at least 6 months. Initially to cover the pokey wires at the back and also because my bottom teeth were so out of line, particularly my canines, I used wax there. I haven't needed wax in quite a while now but I would say to anybody who needs it to just use it. It is a great invention and I would have been lost without it. And I've never had a canker (or mouth ulcer) the whole time I've been in braces which I put down to 1)luck 2)keeping well hydrated 3)using wax when needed.

On those rare occasions where I had sores, I found that I needed to continue to use wax for at least a couple of days after the sore seemed to be completely healed, since the new tissue apparently tends to be more delicate.
I kept wax on about a day after it healed.
I still need to make a trip to my orthodontist though since I ran all out of wax and my canker sore is still there!!
I have converted to the daily religion of WAX - can't live without it; bleed, ulcerate and swell without it, so why not?
Can't say how many packets I've gone through - have them parked everywhere I frequent and always one or two at hand. Can't eat with it on, though, yuck!
I've probably swallowed enough to keep my gizzards aglowing, he he!
I admire all you brave, tough souls who can do without - inspirations!
Rainy in Seattle: greetings from another West Coast kid! Your post is a riot!!!
Major wax fetish going on. Never thought it would happen to me. I hate the way it looks, but can't stand life without it. Sigh.
Caveat: got an allergic reaction to one brand - the "DOTS" in the nifty pkg with oval mirror on back. Idiosyncratic, I'm sure - just be careful.
I used wax for about the first month. I only had 3 spots where I had to use it. On the posts on each canine bracket as my lip kept getting hung up otherwise (on one more so than the other) and on the one wisdom tooth that I have a molar bracket on.
After the first month my canines had moved enough that my lip no longer got attached to them so easily and the skin beside the molar bracket had adapted to it (adapted=created it own little hidey space on the inside of my cheek & healed )
2 upper 1st bicuspids extracted
Uppers braced (metal), molar bands upper & lower 25 May 07
Lowers braced 22 Oct 07
Next adjustment 21 Apr 2008
Estimated brace time 2.5 years
I've had full braces for about 15 months and I've never used wax. Yeah, sometimes it hurts like HELL but it usually goes away on its own. So...yes I think I'm weird like that ^^.
